Hi all,.... Well, we had our appointment with the IM vet on Friday.
I don't know what to think or feel; I'm just depressed and numb. I
      guess mainly because Blaze had more fluid buildup after only 3 days;
she drew off 110 cc's. She said to keep her on the same dosages of
meds which the other vet had prescribed. She thought that it was
chyle after seeing the fluid...said it was pinkish, orange or
pinkish, yellow, I forget which. But she said in order to be sure
that she had to have a fluid analysis done. So, by the time we got
through, she had talked me into complete blood work, fluid analysis
and checking triglyceride levels. The total came to $677.45 after I
had gone there expecting it to be $500.00. Darn, why can't I just be
rich and young again so that I would have more stamina (and
      finances) to do everything possible?:-)

After I mentioned rutin (per this great group) she advised me to try
1-500 mg. of that twice a day. I stopped at the Vitamin Shoppe on
the way home and picked up a bottle of Country Life rutin. The one
thing I didn't notice until I got home was that it also has 21 mg.
of calcium in it (as calcium carbonate). Is there any
contraindication to that with Blaze's problems? She (Dr. Rackear)
told me to pound the tablet up and put it her food. I was worried
about the taste but, oddly enough, when I tasted the powder, I did
not detect 'any' taste...very bland. Sure enough, when I put the 1st
powdered tablet in Blaze's food, she didn't object at all.

Do any of you know why the vet said that checking the trigylceride
levels was important? She also said that she thought Blaze had
restrictive cardiomyopathy. Is that the worst case scenario? The doc
said that she would call me on Monday with the lab results. So, all
weekend, it will be worrying and watching my baby, worrying that
maybe that d*** fluid is building up again. I can hardly sleep or
eat I'm so stressed about all this.

I'm just rambling on too much. As always, any new advice or thoughts
      will be much appreciated.

      With a heavy heart,
      Shirley

I have not had to deal with that yet.
Restrictive cardiomyopathy.. That is what my Q-tip has. She was
diagnosed on Feb. 21st, 2006 and has made an amazing recovery according to
the vet. She was taken to the vet with severe CHF ( her lungs were 3/4 full
of fluid) according to the vet, an severely enlarged heart, and "was getting
ready to die ". She recovered amazingly with the medications that she is on
at this time, and is bouncing around like normal. I know that we could have
the worst case scenario at any time, but right now she is doing well. So
        there is hope.
        Q-tip is taking
        Lasix 6.25mg daily
        Enalapril 2.5mg daily
        Atenlol 6.25 mg daily.. Ithink. It's a 1/4 pill
        1 coq-10 daily 30mg
        1 nattokensise daily
        1 cardio strength daily
        1 tabby tab daily

          Hi Shirley,

I am glad you were able to get Blaze to the IM. We all know the feelings that you are having right now. And it is OK to feel that way. It is a lot to absorb.

You said the IM "thought" Blaze had RCM. Did she say why? RCM and HCM are similar and an untrained eye could get it wrong. But I will not lie to you, RCM is the worst of the cardiomyopathies. My Alec had it. There are others here that are dealing with it too. It does not mean that Blaze is necessarily going to die quicker than if she had HCM. However, if Blaze has chyle in her pleural space that does complicate things. You were right to buy the rutin. If you can find rutin without the calcium, that would be best. Blaze could get too much calcium in her system and you don't want to complicate things more. Alec was diagnosed with chyle, like Blaze, and I got his rutin from GNC. These stores are everywhere or you can get it online www.gnc.com . It can be found other places too without the calcium. Are you giving the rutin 500mg 2x a day or 250 mg 2x a day? How much does Blaze weigh? Most cats with chyle should get closer to 250 mg 2x a day. It takes at least two weeks to a
month to start working if it is going to work. There is not much information/research out there on it but that is what others have told me when Alec started on the rutin. You will probably need to get Blaze's chest tapped during this time too. It will help her breathe and give the rutin more of a fighting chance to do its work.

I am not sure on the reasons why the IM wanted the triglycerides checked. But I would ask them to send you a copy of all tests including the echo's written report. That way, if you have to go to the ER with Blaze you will have everything to show them.

Although it may feel like your world is upside down right now, there are things you can do for Blaze to help her. Once we get the chyle thing beat, things will be easier. And we are here for you two!

Leah and her cats and Angel Alec
