The EKG was done exclusively before the ultrasound
became common in veterinary practice. Currently an
ultrasound only without an EKG is probably the most
common procedure for diagnosing a murmur. There are
different types of ultrasound, 2D and Color Flow
Doppler. Doppler shows blood flow, 2D shows chamber
dimensions and mitral valve. If money is an issue I
would ask for 2D and forego the EKG and xray. Since
stress is an issue you can visit http://acvim.org and
search for either a cardiologist or a small animal
internal medicine vet. There are more internists than
there are cardiologists so you may find an internist
who is closer than the closest cardiologist. An
internist is qualified to diagnose and treat HCM.
