Diarrhea can have many causes, including parasites; pathogens (such as
viruses); reaction to something ingested (such as food or medication) or inhaled or
in contact with the animal; disease process either in the digestive system or
elsewhere in the body.
That said, diarrhea occurs when there is an imbalance of moisture in the gut
in relation to the amount of solid material. More fluid, fewer solids equals
diarrhea; less fluid, more solids equals constipation.

That could be caused by any of the possibilities mentioned above, as well as
"mechanical" issues with the lower digestive system that controls outflow.

Chronic diarrhea can cause dehydration, because of the constant loss of
moisture...and also because of the loss or malabsorption of nutrients. Weakness can
also be indicative of the general misery of chronic diarrhea as well as a
disease process that is contributing to general malaise.

That also can have various causes.

It might be helpful to think about the following:
1. When did the diarrhea start? That is, can it be related to any change in
the environment, such as starting a medication, changing a food, using a toxic
substance around the cat (a detergent, paint, etc)
2. When does the diarrhea occur? That is, does the cat "leak" stool
constantly...or does the cat pass stool a specific number of hours after eating??
3. Are there any other symptoms besides diarrhea?
4. What does the cat eat specifically (brand, flavor, canned or dry)?
5. What medications does the cat take?
