Subject: [feline-heart] Intro, sort of, and question re BP medications

I'm not exactly new to this list, because I've been subscribed for
ages - but I've been on web only and have not been very diligent
      about checking it regularly.

But I'm here now at Helen's suggestion. My CRF boy Tye has just been
found to have very high blood pressure. The vet who checked his BP
yesterday (an emergency vet rather than his regular vet, long story)
recommended that he start on BP meds immediately rather than waiting
a couple of days for us to see our regular vet for follow-up, and he
prescribed Enalapril at 1mg. per day. I have a ten-day supply of the
Enalapril and a Monday a.m. appointment with my regular vet.

What I know now, and what I didn't realize yesterday when I was at
the vet's, is that most of the folks on the CRF list with CRF/high BP
kitties use Norvasc rather than Enalapril. So I've started trying to
find info about how the two drugs compare when used on cats - the
pros and cons of each when it comes to effectiveness, risks, side
effects, etc. If Tye is going to have to be on BP meds, I just want
to make sure he's on the best possible one for him, and I figure the
more info I have when I see my regular vet tomorrow the better off I
      am.

If anyone here has any words of wisdom to share about how Norvasc and
Enalapril compare, and the pros and cons of each, I'd welcome your
      input.

      Many thanks
      Beth and Tye
