I had written to the hyperT group about energy levels, and
co-incidentally received the post about Pongo even though I hadn't written
to this group about Pebbles' energy levels.
Pebbles has been on Inderal (one quarter tablet twice a day) for about
6 weeks. I haven't noticed any increase in energy like Pongo. I do notice
she seems calmer and less bothered, and her breathing seems smoother too
(though the vet didn't think the occasional exagerrated breathing was from
her heart). He said it could be a bronchial thing and Inderal can relax the
airways. I thought I had read that Inderal shouldn't be given with asthma.
Pebbles doesn't have asthma though. It was the general vet I spoke to.
Perhaps I should call the specialist who prescribed the Inderal and ask him
      all these questions.
I wonder why different cats with HCM are prescribed different drugs? I
have heard some good things about diltiazem several times and am curious
about whether this might be good for Pebbles.
Does anyone know the different actions of different medications given
      for HCM?

Dear Helen, thanks Helen. I will check out your web site. What was the question about CoQ10 and taurine? I will try to help. Love, Voula and Pebbles and Lucy

Here's what I know about taurine:

          1) A taurine deficiency can cause severe heart problems, particularly
          dilated cardiomyopathy.

          2) Taurine deficiency is rare in non-ferals, since all commercial cat food
now containts adequate levels of taurine (this was not true many years ago).
Lynx's cardiologist suggested that it wasn't worth worrying about, unless
your cat is eating primarily a non-cat-specific diet (e.g., people food).
(I'm not 100% sure about raw diets, but I believe that meat contains LOTS of
taurine, so there's no problem there, either.)

          3) There's no harm in adding taurine to the cat's diet (check with your vet
          for dosage).

          4) If it has an affect, it would show up on ECGs.
