John Peel Autobiography Due Next Fall

      Aaron Mandel reports:
John Peel's unexpected death on October 26th left many of the famous
British DJ's goals unachieved-- for example, getting Mark E. Smith's face
onto British currency, or creating an entire BBC bureau devoted to
Zimbabwean pop music. However, more modestly (and factually), Peel had been
working on his memoirs, for which UK publisher Transworld had offered him
over 1.5 million pounds sterling. Estimates of how far Peel had gotten on
the book lie squarely in the one-third to one-half range. However, his wife
and his publisher have now announced that what exists of Peel's memoirs
will still see publication, filled out with "biographical material and
      personal reminiscences" by his family.

The British branch of Amazon.com already states that the book will be
published on September 1st, 2005. But then, their website also claims that
it will be titled Autobiograhy and written by "Peel John." Larry Finlay,
managing director of Transworld, confirmed the date in broad terms, but
demurred from Amazon's details (and typographical issues), telling the BBC
only that "there will be a book-- obviously a different book from the one
      we wanted-- coming next autumn."

A more immediate homage to Peel is scheduled for December 16th, when BBC
Radio 1 will present a musical tribute program including his favorite
records, as well as live performances by bands like Underworld and The
Wedding Present. Overseas listeners can hear an internet stream of the
broadcast as it happens, and for up to seven days afterward at the BBC
