The New Year Ready New LP, Hell House Score
So everybody put your best suit or dress on

      Ashford Tucker reports:
The New Year are gearing up to release their second full-length, The End Is
Near, on May 18th via Touch & Go Records. *Pause for emphasis* Commence
      high-fiving.

Principal songwriters Matt and Bubba Kadane first stirred up the worship of
music critics in the mid-90s under the moniker Bedhead. Their decidedly
patient approach, tasteful guitar interplay, and well-conceived knack for
crescendo yielded some truly literate and accessible indie rock-- perhaps
slow at times in delivery, but loveable for it, and somehow ever solid in
execution, despite their general air of nonchalance.

Bedhead released three LPs over a seven-year career and split in 1998. Matt
and Bubba then headed for the studio with friend/tour-guitarist Peter
Schmidt, drummer Chris Brokaw (formerly of Boston rock outfit Come), and
bassist Mike Donofrio, to record what would become the first New Year
album, 2001's Newness Ends. As it turned out, a step up in tempo put a new
coat of paint on familiar weaving guitars, while Brokaw's intricate
drumming gave the songs newfound strut. But then, after being greeted with
open arms by fans and critics alike, the Kadanes summarily disappeared for
      a few years.

Now, in 2004, that same New Year lineup returns for The End is Near, with
the addition of Saddle Creeker Josh McKay (who, in true Saddle Creek form,
plays the "miscellaneous"). While the vocal/drums relationship that was
heavily tinkered with last time around is, for the most part, scrapped on
End, the same investigations into rhythm and meter color the new songs.
Would-be-glaring shifts in time signature are executed naturally and with
confidence. Somebody out there be the first to spraypaint "indie rock ain't
      dead" on something. Tracklist:

      01 The End Is Near
      02 Sinking Ship
      03 Chinese Handcuffs
      04 Plan B
      05 Disease
      06 Age of Conceit
      07 Start
      08 18
      09 Stranger to Kindness

In related Kadane brothers news, Plexifilm has just issued their
instrumental score to the 2001 documentary, Hell House, as a CD EP. The
music was recorded with Steve Albini at his Electrical Audio Studios in
Chicago, and soundtracked the film's depiction of a haunted house put on
annually during Halloween by caricatured conservative Christians in Texas,
which is intended to show the horrors of modern sins like abortion, drugs,
      and date rape.
