Playlist for Memphis to Manchester on February 01, 2007

      Key: Artist - Title - Album - +=Request *=New
      [Notes]

The Soul Clan - That's How It Feels - Beg, Scream, & Shout - Rhino
[ This was the flip side to their only single, "Soul Meeting",
and was recorded in 1968. Not bad personnel as far as bands go --
Arthur Conley, Ben E. King, Solomon Burke, Don Covay, & Joe Tex.
Originally, Otis Redding was going to take part. After his early
demise, his protege, Arthur Conley, took his place. ]

The Knight Brothers - Temptation 'Bout To Get Me - The Chess Story
      1965-75 - Universal

The Soul Angels - It's All In Your Mind - What It Is! Funky Soul &
      Rare Grooves - Rhino
[ Thankfully, this 4-CD collection of funk & soul has unearthed
all kinds of hard to find treasures. Not much is known about this
band but this single was released on Josie Records in 1969. This
compilation was one of the very best reissues to come out in 2006. ]

The Memphis Horns - Soul Bowl - What It Is! Funky Soul & Rare
      Grooves - Rhino
[ This is a track that originally was on their Cotillion LP
released in 1969 called (and who would have guessed) "Memphis
      Horns." ]

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

Ko & The Knockouts - Black & Blue - Ko & The Knockouts - Sympathy
      For The Record Industry
[ This set featured all Michigan bands. Ko Shih is the fuzz
bass player in the Dirtbombs & she handles most of the vocals on this
release. This is their debut album that came out in 2002. ]

The Detroit Cobras - Can't Miss Nothing - Life, Love, & Leaving -
      Sympathy For The Record Industry
[ Really strong garage rock versions of (mainly) soul songs.
This is an Ike Turner song. ]

      ? & The Mysterians - I Need Somebody - The Best Of ? & The
      Mysterians - Cameo Parkway 1966-67 - ABKCO
[ This band was formed in Saginaw, MI. A special benefit for
Question Mark featuring The Gentleman Callers, The Nevermores, and
The Vultures is taking place at Off Broadway on Friday (March 30).
As you may know, Question Mark lost virtually everything he owned in
a tragic fire. A fund has been set up and you can read more about the
      benefit at http://www.garagepunk.com/questionmark/ ]

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

The Roches - Acadian Driftwood - Endless Highway: The Music Of The
      Band - 429 Records*
[ This is one terrific take of the Band song. Between this, the
Lee Ann Womack cover of "The Weight" and the Rosanne Cash cover
of "The Unfaithful Servant", I've already got my money's worth. ]

Fairport Convention - Million Dollar Bash - Unhalfbricking -
      Hannibal

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

      Peter, Bjorn, & John - Young Folks - Writer's Block - V2*
[ This track by the Scandinavian band also features Victoria
Bergsman (from the Concretes). Available as an import last year &
just being released domestically now. ]

Lindsey Buckingham - I Am Waiting - Under The Skin - Reprise*
[ Appearing this Saturday (2/3) at the Pageant. A rare St.
      Louis appearance. ]

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

The Five Stairsteps - O-O-H Child - The First Family Of Soul -
      Buddah

Chris Clark - Do I Love You (Indeed I Do) - A Cellarful Of Motown -
      Motown / Universal

New Pornographers - Twin Cinema - Twin Cinema - Matador

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

Camera Obscura - Suspended From Class - Under Achievers Please Try
      Harder - Merge+
[ Camera Obscura (Glasgow, Scotland) will be at the Blue Note in
Columbia this Monday (2/5). Opening is Pony Up!. Doors open at 8:00
      PM. I won't miss this one. ]

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

The Nerves - When You Find Out - The Nerves EP - Nerves
[ If your band's only official release is going to be one 4-song
EP, might as well make it a great 4-song EP. ]

The Shadows Of Knight - Shake - Dark Sides: The Best Of The Shadows
      Of Knight - Rhino

Holly Golightly - Time Will Tell - Truly She Is None Other -
      Damaged Goods

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

Evolution Control Committee - Rebel Without A Pause - The Best In
      The World Ever - NL
[ Sheer genius. A mash up of "The Rhythm, The Rebel" by Public
Enemy and "Bittersweet Samba" by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. ]

CSS - This Month, Day 10 - Cansei De Ser Sexy - Sub Pop*

Ike & Tina Turner - Come Together - wecanworkitout - Harmless
[ This is a good version. But not as good as a version of "Come
Together" by Ike & Tina Turner should be. ]

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

The Holmes Brothers - Bad Moon Rising - State Of Grace - Alligator*
[ This cajun-flavored set reminds me that there will be a Mardi
Gras concert/dance party this Friday (2/2) at the Schlafly Tap Room.
Featured will be the music of Corey Young & Zydeco Embrace. Corey
Young plays the accordion and leads this five-piece band out of Lake
Charles, LA. The show begins at 8:30 PM & a dance lesson will
precede the music at 8:00pm. Go to www.thefocalpoint.org or call
      (314) 781-4200 for more information. ]

C.C. Adcock - Runaway Life - Lafayette Marquis - Yep Roc

Clarence Gatemouth Brown - Mama Mambo - Dirty Laundry: The Soul Of
      Black Country - Trikont

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

Two Cow Garage - Ain't No Shame - TBD - TND*
[ The Frederick's Music Lounge Anniversary Show will be taking
place at Off Broadway this Saturday (2/3) and features Fertlizer Bomb
(St. Louis), Two Cow Garage (Columbus, OH), and the Saps (Chicago,
IL). Show time is at 9:00 PM. This track was from Two Cow Garage's
forthcoming release. You can read Roy Kasten's synopsis of the Saps
      at http://www.rftstl.com/Issues/2007-01-31/music/critics7.html ]

The Blasters - American Music - Testament: The Complete Slash
      Recordings (1981-1985) - Rhino
[ The pride of Downey, California. Don't forget that Dave Alvin
& The Guilty Men will be appearing at Off Broadway this coming
Thursday (2/8). Todd Kessler is opening. Show begins at 9:00 PM. ]

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

Robbie Fulks - Cocktails - 13 Hillbilly Giants - Bloodshot
[ Robbie Fulks will be appearing at Mojo's in Columbia this
Friday (2/2). Plus, Danny Barnes is opening. Why no St. Louis date?
He usually does well here. ]

The Holmes Brothers - Close The Door - State Of Grace - Alligator
[ Truth be told, I forgot this CD was still in the player &
played it by mistake. Still, you can do a lot worse than hearing the
Holmes Brothers twice in one show. They wrote this song and it's
every bit as good as the choice covers included on this release. ]

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

Ray Charles - Busted - The Complete Country & Western Recordings
      1956-86 - Rhino
[ This is as good as music gets. Ray Charles covering Harlan
      Howard. ]

Chuck Higgins - Broke - Pachuko Hop - Specialty
[ Blistering sax on this slice of East-LA R&B recorded in 1954.
If this stuff can't get a party going, find new friends. ]

The Coasters - Love Potion No. 9 - Blow Up a Go Go! - Orchard
[ Nothing gets the people waiting for Al Swacker's "Greaser's
Lunchbox" show more fired up than hearing a song with a flute solo in
it. I kind of forgot about that. And so concludes this week's
special "Another technical glitch? What? Is a chimp running the board
this week?" edition of Memphis To Manchester. ]
