Playlist for Memphis to Manchester on January 25, 2007

      Key: Artist - Title - Album - +=Request *=New
      [Notes]

Otis Redding - Stay In School Announcement - Stay In School: Don't
Be A Drop Out - Stax
[ Of course, I had to start off with the obligatory "soul songs
extolling the virtues of education" part of the show. Otis Redding
wrote & sang this stay in school announcement in 1967. ]

Brenda Holloway - Pay It Cool, Stay In School - The Complete Motown
      Singles: Volume 6 - 1966 - Motown / Hip-O Select*
[ This one was recorded but never was officially released as a
single. They saw fit to include it in this recent compilation of all
Motown singles (A & B sides) released in 1966. The liner notes
indicate that Brenda Holloway thought she was selected to sing this
because of her fine diction. Coming off some opening slots for the
Beatles probably didn't hurt, either. ]

James Brown - Don't Be A Drop Out - Star Time - Polygram
[ Recorded and released as a single by King in 1966. Ended up
      being a Top 5 R&B hit. ]

Pastel Six - Horny aka Hot Dogger - It Came From The Suburbs - Ace*

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

Impressions - I'm So Proud - Definitive Impressions - Kent
[ I was reminded of this song after hearing it performed by the
Flat Five (Kelly Hogan-vocals, Nora O’Connor-guitar/vocals, Scott
Ligon- guitar/keyboards/vocals, Casey McDonough- bass/vocals) last
Friday at the latest Rick Wood House Concert. And if you're
wondering who the missing Flat Five member was, it was Gerald Dowd-
drums/vocals. They absolutely nailed this song. ]

Esquires - And Get Away - The Best Of The Esquires - Prestige
      Elite+
[ I had a request to hear this song from the Milwaukee, WI soul
band. Fun song & certainly meant to capitalize on their previous
(and biggest hit) "Move On Up" single. ]

      Soul Sisters - I Can't Stand It - Beg, Scream, & Shout - Rhino

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

Rosanne Cash - The Unfaithful Servant - Endless Highway: The Music
Of The Band - 429 Records*
[ Quite a mixed-bag of different artists performing Band songs
here. It runs the gamut from Widespread Panic to Rosanne Cash. Some
songs, like this one and Lee Ann Womack's version of "The Weight",
are really terrific. This comes out on July 30. ]

      Mavis Staples - 99 and 1/2 - We'll Never Turn Back - Anti-*
[ Mark your calender. This comes out April 24th. Produced by
      Ry Cooder. ]

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

Holmes Brothers - I Can't Help It If I'm Still In Love With You -
      State Of Grace - Alligator*
[ Rosanne Cash helps out on vocals on this Hank Williams song. ]

      Pete Townshend & Ronnie Lane - Annie - Rough Mix - Hip-O
[ Flat out beautiful. When Ronnie Lane does songs like this one
or "Debris", they are masterpieces. This was recently reissued with
bonus tracks & improved sound. Well worth owning. ]

Pogues - Dirty Old Town - Rum, Sodomy, & The Lash - WEA

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

Susanna & The Magical Orchestra - Love Will Tear Us Apart - Love
Will Tear You Apart - Mojo*
[ This disc accompanied the latest (Feb / 07) issue of Mojo
magazine. It has Joy Division on the cover. Included is this CD and
it's worth the price of the magazine just for the incredible version
of this song by this Norwegian duo. I've never heard of Susanna &
The Magical Orchestra, before. It says they have been performing
      together since 2000. ]

Linda Thompson - Dear Mary - Fashionably Late - Rounder

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

CSS - Off The Hook - Cansei De Ser Sexy - Sub Pop*
      [ Off-kilter Brazilian dance/rock/punk band. Somebody e-mailed
& asked if this song was by Sleater-Kinney. Other songs sound way
different. I'd like to hear this band live. ]

French, Frith, Kaiser, & Thompson - Now That I Am Dead - Invisible
      Means - Windham Hill
[ First Windham Hill M2M airplay, ever. "I am Mr. Dead." ]

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

Velvet Crush - Time Wraps Around You - Teenage Symphonies To God -
      550 / Epic
      [ Great pop album from 1994. ]

Byrds - She Don't Care About Time - Set You Free 1964-73 - Raven
[ This compilation features all the Byrds songs that featured
Gene Clark. This Gene Clark song was recorded in 1965. ]

Sloan - Fading Into Obscurity - Never Hear The End Of It - Yep Roc*
      [ Great pop album from 2007. ]

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

Sam Phillips - These Boots Are Made For Walking - Ready To Wear
      ST - Columbia

Archie Bell & The Drells - (There's Gonna Be A) Showdown - The Beat
      Goes On.... - Kent
[ Dance floor competition song smackdown! ]

Yo La Tengo - Mr. Tough - I Am Not Afraid Of You And I Will Beat
      Your Ass - Matador
[ Archie Bell & The Drells win. But just barely. ]

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

Animals - Bury My Body - Best Of The Animals - ABKCO
[ Eric Burdon & The Animals will be appearing at the Bottleneck
Blues Bar (i.e. Ameristar Casino) on Thursday (2/15). If you go to
      http://www.ameristar.com/stcharles/sc_et_event_detail.asp?id=988 ,
it's pretty much the way I always remember The Animals looking. As
one listener who called in said -- "two of them have gray hair. And
      one is five-three." I won't miss this, though. ]

Jr. Walker & The All Stars - Nothing But Soul - The Complete Motown
      Singles: Volume 6 - 1966 - Motown / Hip-O Select*
[ This was the b-side to "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By
You)." Through the magic of multi-tracking, you get more than one
sax being played by Junior Walker. ]

Magnolia Summer - Around & Around - Brown Eyed Handsome Man -
      Undertow
[ It never fails. Every time I play this song, somebody calls
in to find out who the artist is. ]

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

Camera Obscura - If Looks Could Kill - Let's Get Out Of This
      Country - Merge
[ See them February 5 at the Blue Note in Columbia. That's as
close to St. Louis as this Scottish band gets. Why would you even
      think of missing this? ]

Blur - End Of A Century - Parklife - SBK

      Beatles - I'm Down - Rock 'n' Roll Music - Vol. 2 - Capitol

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

Raspberries - Overnight Sensation ( Hit Record) - Greatest -
      Capitol
[ Michael McBride (Drums, Vocals): "I remember that Shelley
Yakus, our engineer, said that the drum part at the end of Overnight
Sensation sounded like somebody pushing a refrigerator down the
      stairs." ]

      Ramones - We're A Happy Family - Rocket To Russia - Warner / Rhino
