Playlist for Memphis to Manchester on November 23, 2006

      Key: Artist - Title - Album - +=Request *=New
      [Notes]

      Ray Davies - Thanksgiving Day - Other People's Lives - V2
[ Happy Thanksgiving Day, everybody. This is from his solo
debut release which came out in February of this year. There is not
an overabundance of Thanksgiving songs out there but this is a good
      one. ]

Paul Kelly - How To Make Gravy - Words & Music - Vanguard
[ Kind of an apt title for Thanksgiving even though it's really
a song about Christmas. I think this one of Paul Kelly's very best
      songs. ]

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

Randy Newman - My Country - Bad Love - DreamWorks
[ "Now your children are your children,
even when they're grown / When they speak to you, you got to listen
to what they have to say / But they all live alone now, they have TVs
of their own / but they keep on coming over anyway /
And much as I love them / I'm always kind of glad when they go away" ]

Karen Dalton - In A Station - In My Own Time - Light In The Attic*
[ Karen Dalton was part of the NY folk scene but she only
recorded two albums. This was just reissued & it's the first time
I've ever heard her. Her voice gets compared to Billie Holiday but I
think that only holds true for a couple of songs on this release.
She really does justice to this Richard Manuel song. ]

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

The Band - Don't Do It - Rock Of Ages - Capitol
[ This set featured songs done by Marvin Gaye. The Band
completely makes this song their own. I think this release has to be
considered one of the best live rock recordings, ever. No band
should have three vocalists this good. Recorded at a New Years Eve
      show in 71/72. ]

Gladys Knight & The Pips - That's The Way Love Is - Feelin'
      Bluesy - Motown
[ This album just got re-released as a "two-fer" that also
includes "Everybody Needs Love" plus four bonus tracks. Just thought
I'd mention that for the Gladys Knight & The Pips completists out
      there. ]

Marvin Gaye - Ain't That Peculiar - The Complete Motown Singles
      Vol. 5: 1965 - Motown / Hip-O Select
[ The Complete Motown Singles Vol. 6: 1966 gets released the day
after Thanksgiving. Five CDs featuring every A & B side for every
single released by Motown in 1966. Three-quarters of all Motown
releases in 1966 landed someplace on the charts. That's pretty
amazing. Smokey Robinson and the Miracles guitarist Marv Tarplin
came up with the basic idea for "Ain't That Peculiar" and it was then
fleshed out by Smokey Robinson, Warren "Pete" Moore, and Bobby
Rogers. The new issue of Mojo magazine has a long & interesting
story on Smokey Robinson. One of the things mentioned in the article
is that Smokey Robinson stole Marv Tarplin from Diana Ross & The
      Supremes. ]

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

Don Varner - More Power To Ya' - Finally Got Over! - RPM / Shout+
[ Don Varner was pretty much unheralded but the Alabama native
recorded a lot with Quinn Ivy and covered songs by the likes of Bert
Berns, Dan Penn, & Eddie Hinton. He wrote this song and it was
recorded around 1968-69. Liner notes are a little sketchy. ]

Lee Dorsey - Yes We Can - Yes We Can / Night People - Raven+
[ This is as good as it gets. Lee Dorsey performing one of
Allen Toussaint's very best songs and backed by the Meters back in
      1970. ]

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Winterlong - Live At The Fillmore East -
      Reprise*
[ This CD / DVD set is from two live performances recorded in
1973 and features some original members of Crazy Horse (Danny
Whitten, Billy Talbot and Ralph Molina) plus Jack Nitzsche. ]

Greg Brown - Why Don't You Just Go Home - Slant 6 Mind - Red House

Tom Waits - Walk Away - Orphans - Anti-*
[ This three-CD set of mosty unreleased and rare material by Tom
Waits was just released this week. This is a must-have for any fans
of Tom Waits. Packaged really well and priced right, also. ]

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

Gentleman Auction House - A Hospital Or Heaven - The Rules Were
      Handed Down - Self*
[ New debut EP released by the local band. Gentleman Auction
House is performing this Sunday (11/26) @ 3:00 PM at the Rock n Roll
Craft Show III taking place at the Mad Art Gallery. More info about
the band is available at www.myspace.com/gentlemanauctionhouse ]

Alejandro Escovedo - I Was Drunk - Bourbonitis Blues - Bloodshot

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

The Fratellis - 3 Skinny Girls - Uncut October, 2006 CD Sampler -
      Uncut*
[ Note to all bands: If you are going to use words the FCC
absolutely hates, do what this band does. Put them in the talking
intro before for the song starts and the talking outro after the song
ends. Easier to edit. This is just an insanely-catchy rock song. ]

Spoon - Tear Me Down - Wig In A Box - Off Records

Nick Lowe - So It Goes - The Doings (box set) - Edsel

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

The Phoenix Foundation - Going Fishing - Horsepower - Caravan
[ The New Zealand band recorded this in 2002 but it just became
widely available in 2006 on this Cravan release. ]

Beatles - Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite / I Want You (She's So
Heavy) / Helter Skelter - Love - Capitol*
[ This sounded absolutely amazing with headphones. This is so
much better than I thought it would be. Technology used for good
instead of evil. If they wouldn't have stuck with all the original
Beatles parts, it wouldn't nearly be the success it is. ]

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

Shirley Ellis - Ever See A Diver Kiss His Wife While The Bubbles
Bounce About Above The Water - The Complete Congress Recordings -
      Connoisseur Collection
[ This one is just plain whacky. ]

Kirsty MacColl - They Don't Know - The One & Only - Metro
[ A perfect pop song. Only a curmudgeon of the highest order
could not like this song. ]

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

Neko Case - Star Witness - Fox Confessor Brings The Flood - Anti-
[ Still in the running for my favorite album of the year.
      Highly recommended. ]

Richmond Fontaine - Capsized - Thirteen Cities - Winners Casino
      Music*
[ This is a track from the Portland band's forthcoming album.
This album sounds more like the full-band sound of "Post To Wire" and
less like the more-stripped down last album, "The Fitzgerald."
Prediction: Mojo & Uncut will love it. ]

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

Ruth Brown - (Mama) He Treats Your Daughter Mean - The R&B Box -
      Rhino
[ Ruth Brown just passed away at the age of 78 due to a heart
attack & stroke. I was lucky enough to see her several years ago and
she still could sing really well. She started recording for Atlantic
Records ("The House That Ruth Built") in the 1950s and was a large
influence on the vocals of Little Richard (among others). ]

Ruth Brown - Wild Wild Young Men - Atlantic R&B 1947-74 (box set) -
      Atlantic

Ruth Brown - Teardrops From My Eyes - We're Gonna Rock -- We're
      Gonna Roll - Proper
