Playlist for Memphis to Manchester on August 04, 2005

      Key: Artist - Title - Album - +=Request *=New
      [Notes]

Patrice Holloway - Those DJ Shows - A Cellarful Of Motown - Vol. 2 -
      Universal*
[ This new 2-CD compilation is made up of 42 tracks of
previously-unreleased Motown tracks. Patrice Holloway is the sister
of Brenda Holloway and only recorded a couple of singles on her own.
This Smokey Robinson-penned track is just one of many gems. Buy
      this! ]

Earl Van Dyke - All Day All Night - A Cellarful Of Motown - Vol. 2 -
      Universal*
[ Another great track off the aforementioned Motown compilation.
The Vandellas are heard on background vocals on this one. ]

The Poets - Baby Don't You Do It - Immediate Box Set - Castle
[ This band from Glasgow recorded this Motown song in 1966. The
track was produced by Paul Raven (aka Gary Glitter). ]

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

Elvis Costello - Lipstick Vogue - This Year's Model - Rykodisc
[ Elvis Costello put on about as perfect a set as one can hope
to see from him last Tuesday at the Pageant. If you missed him this
time around, I would urge you not to do it again when (if) he returns
      to St. Louis. ]

Small Faces - What 'Cha Gonna Do About It - This Is The Modern
      World - Universal
[ This two-CD contains 49 "classic mod anthems." Hey, they
couldn't say it if it wasn't true. Actually, this is pretty great -
combining soul tracks (and not just the obvious ones) with
garage rock and the best of the 60s/70s English bands. And as an
      added bonus, it's bargain-priced & packaged nicely. ]

The Gentleman Callers - Ramona Say Yes - Brown Eyed Handsome Man -
      Undertow*
[ Alright, aren't these guys about due to put out a full-length
CD? Anyway, a fine version of a not often covered Chuck Berry song.
And proceeds from this compilation help benefit KDHX. ]

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

Nikka Costa - Happy In The Morning - can'tneverdidnothin' - Virgin*
[ This one sounds like a good Prince song which works for these
      ears. ]

      Shirley Bassey - Vehicle - Sisters Sanctified - Vol. 1 - Girls*
[ Up to now, I've only heard the Ides Of March version. This is
off a new release (only available on vinyl) which features rare funk
      & soul tunes from the 60s and 70s. ]

Aretha Franklin - The House That Jack Built - Soul In The Midnight
      Hour - Kent
[ You really can't do much better for a one disc soul collection
than this compilation put out on Kent records. 26 tracks of wall to
      wall greatness. ]

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

Percy Mayfield - I Don't Want To Be President - Percy Mayfield: His
Tangerine & Atlantic Sides - Rhino Handmade
[ Why, oh why, couldn't some Texan have uttered this same
      phrase? ]

Rolling Stones - The Last Time - Out Of Our Heads - Abkco

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

      Junior Murvin - Police & Thieves - Police & Thieves - Mango
[ Thanks to Ken from Cockeysville for making me aware of this
recording. This was recorded in Lee Perry's studio and the song was
composed by Junior Murvin & Lee Perry. The vocal on this is so great.
Somebody called in and asked which version came first - this one of
the one by the Clash. I first heard this song (like a lot of people,
I suspect) on the first Clash album. ]

      David Lindley - Don't Look Back - El Rayo-X - Elektra / Asylum
[ This is one of those albums it seems like everybody should
own. No weak tracks on this release. Off-kilter originals combined
with covers done in unexpected musical styles. This Smokey Robinson
track is just one of the many highlights. Plus, Ras Baboo percussion
which sounds wonderful, throughout. Plus, it's just fun to say "Ras
Baboo." Fritz Fuller is responsible for writing many off-the-wall
songs for David Lindley over the years. David Lindley mentioned once
in concert that Fritz Fuller wrote 200 songs in 1976 to celebrate the
      Bicentennial. ]

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

Graham Parker & The Figgs - Vanity Press - Songs Of No Consequence -
      Bloodshot*
[ No mention, yet, of St. Louis being one of his stops on his
tour which is now under way. Hope that changes. ]

Hem - (The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes - Almost You - The Songs
      Of Elvis Costello - Glurp
[ This band opened up for Elvis Costello last Tuesday sans their
usual bassist & drummer. Too bad. They still went over pretty well
but it would have really helped with the size of the crowd to help
get their songs across and add some variety. Sally Ellyson sure has a
      beautiful voice. ]

Holly Golightly - There's An End - Truly She Is None Other -
      Damaged Goods
[ Wow, how did I overlook this album in 2003? Great feel
throughout, sublime cover choices ("Tell Me Now So I Know" & "Time
Will Tell" by the Kinks), & really strong originals. May she come
      through St. Louis, someday. ]

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

Chris Isaak - San Francisco Days - San Francisco Days - Reprise
[ Chris Isaak is appearing at the Orpheum this Saturday (8/6).
The show begins at 8:00 PM. ]

Johnny Cash - Solitary Man - Cash Unearthed - American

Martha Wainwright - When The Day Is Short - Martha Wainwright - Zoe
[ I predict this will be in my Top 10 when year-end rolls
around. Uh, there's a little talent in this family. ]

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

      Suzanne Vega - Blood Makes Noise - 99.9 F - A&M
[ Marc Cohn & Suzanne Vega are appearing at The Pageant on
Wednesday (8/10). The show begins at 8:00 PM. ]

Rasberries - Go All The Way - Rasberries Greatest - Capitol

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

Sonny Landreth - South Of I-10 - Doctors, Professors, Kings, &
Queens: The Big Ol' Box Of New Orleans - Shout Factory
[ Sonny Landreth is appearing at the Blueberry Hill Duck Room on
Saturday (8/6). That's a busy night with Bruce Springsteen and Chris
      Isaak also in town. ]

The Sights - Circus - The Sights - New Line*

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

Nanci Griffith - Ford Econoline - Lone Star State Of Mind - MCA
[ Judy Collins and Nanci Griffith are appearing at the Orpheum a
week from Friday (8/12). Show begins at 8:00 PM. ]

Richmond Fontaine - Casino Lights - The Fitzgerald - El Cortez*

Bruce Springsteen - Reason To Believe - Nebraska - Columbia
[ Bruce Springsteen is appearing this Saturday (8/6) at the Fox
Theatre. I would recommend being there on time for that one. The show
starts promptly at 7:30. There will be no opening act and no
      intermission. ]

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

Pernice Brothers - There Goes The Sun - Discover A Lovelier You -
      Ashmont*
[ Appearing at Off Broadway on Saturday (6/6). Also on the bill
are Royal Gun & The Wormwood Scrubs. ]

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

The Marvelettes - Danger Heartbreak Dead Ahead - Beg, Scream, &
      Shout - Rhino

Jr. Walker & The All Stars - Shake & Fingerpop - Beg, Scream, &
      Shout - Rhino

      -------- - -------- - -------- - --------

      Nobody's Children - Good Times - Garage Beat '66 - I'm In Need! -
      Sundazed*
[ You think you had a bad day? Listen to this guy's song.
Excellent use of derisive ha hahs in this song. Volumes 4 & 5 of
this series just came out on Sundazed. ]

      The Barons - Surprise, Surprise - Garage Beat '66 - I'm In Need! -
      Sundazed*
[ Pretty good take on the Stones song by this Long Beach band
that existed for all of two years. ]
