Group Description

FDR (Forum for Democratic Rights) was a name of students movement, which survived roughly for five years only (1995 to 1999) and had resolved to commit itself to the following objectives

1) Democratization and development of campus life.
2) Opposed to all kinds of conservative and obscurantist ideologies.
3) Stands for improved quality of teaching.
4) Opposed to all kinds of feudal, fascist and communal tendencies/ideologies in society.
5) Seeks to unite with all progressive, democratic, secular, liberal and left forces at national level.

Why and how FDR emerged:
The core aspiration of FDR was to revive Aligarh movement and to respond to the challenges of the time through using democracy as its means. In doing so it brought out three core issues of Aligarh Movement, which were
(a) educational upliftment
(b) cultural regeneration
(c) political empowerment of the community

On the other hand, while spreading the real meaning of democracy, it exposed the undemocratic and unrepresentative character of both Indian politics and Muslim leadership. The task didn't stop here. FDR went to the extent of exposing leader-criminal nexus even at the local level. The university situation that sparked to form a group, speak the words of democracy and launch a movement against criminal politics.

There exists a dialectical relationship between minority communalism (read Muslim Communalism) and Majoritarian (read Hindu) communalism. It is difficult, impossible,to fight the majoritarian communalism without fighting the internal Muslim communalism.

Muslim elite whose class interests kept the Muslim educational institutions and other organizations historically depoliticized, custom and tradition-bound,and feudalized, lest the Muslim masses question their monopolization of community resources and their access to state and governmental resources.

What has marked FDR different was its ability to be successful in the struggles it took up.FDR destroyed many rigid walls at AMU
