There were three to chose from. Three stood
before her. St. Peter had told her she could only have
one - but it didn't seem fair, she loved them all.
She had the wisdom of an old woman now, and the
perfect body to match her mind. Being dead wasn't quite
so bad, except now she had to chose where she would
go, and who she would spend eternity
with.

There was STerling. Her childhood companion. They had
shared mud pies, long days at the arcade and endless
days playing baseball in the field behind her house.
They had pledged to marry - to love only one another,
but he had left the world too soon.

There was
Gene, the sturdy, dependable man she had married when
she was 17. He had been a good father, a descent
husband, and when he had left her with an early death -
she thought she would never love again.

Then
there was Thomas. When she was old and didn't bother
trying to make up what was once a beautiful face, Tom
had sat beside her. He listened to her stories about
STerling and Gene. He watched her crochet and
cross-stitch. He admired all of her passions genuinely. He had
made her feel beautiful again - so that she braided
her long silver hair and put it up in a crown about
her hair. For him she made Casoule - the favorite
dish she had long denied herself because Gene hated
Casoule... He had never asked more than her companionship -
considering himself unworthy of even that.

But it was
time to chose between them - time to accept her
eternal reward. She stretched out her hand - Gene started
to stretch his out toward her, when Sterling stoped
him. He looked at Gene with a shared understanding.
They both loved her, but this was "her" reward. Gene
and Sterling looked at Thomas. As realization crept
accross Toms face, he reached out his hand.

Her
smile matched his. She had found her friend, her
companion, her soulmate, and now she claimed him. Death had
brought them together. Eternity awaited.

comments
