      Sarah,

      My son Brayden has received ABA therapy through school off and on since he was 3. Before that we tried it out on our own, too. We haven't been really consistent or extremely intense with it, but it has helped. Without ABA, I don't think he would be doing half the stuff that he does.

      Does anyone find ABA an effective learning for our

      kids with Angelmans? Do any of you receive this

      therapy at home?

                  ABA stands for applied behavioral analysis. it is basically a kind of therapy that works one on one with the child to help teach them any skill that they need to acquire. for example: a very simple session for my son would start with us sitting at the table. first he would be required to look at me and hold his hands still (this is part of an attending program at his school). then we would work on matching his shapes. sometimes he needs hand over hand help, sometimes i just need to point out where the shape goes, other times he is completely independent (depends on his mood, the skill, etc.). Then he gets a small 'treat' for working so hard. the treat can be a cracker, sip of juice, play with a favorite toy for a minute or two..... when he builds up his skills, we will make him wait until he has completed the task several times before he gets the treat, but he will get a token each time so he knows he is getting something later.

                  Hope that makes sense.

                  Teri

                  What is ABA? I'm trying to think if it's so obvious that I'm missing it. :) Thanks, Susan { mom to Ian 2yrs del. + }
