Hello, you know that might or i think it really is true. I live on
Guam, and when Coby was 18 months i was told he "might" have cerebal
palsy, because he wasn't walking, then at 3 said he is showing signs
of autistic. but i knew it couldn't only be that, but then after one
look from a specialist he said coby had angelmans. The school special
education still wouldn't take only angelmans as a diagnose to keep him
in SPED. So they now classify him as mentally retarded. I have already
found four families on Guam who's child has all the symtoms as coby,
but were diagnose as autistic. What i don't understand is, how come
most doctors don't know about angelmans! It seem like i'm a broken
record explaining over and over again "what is Angelman sydrome". But
the next visit is the same. "What does he have?" Sorry so long
everyone, take care and nice chatting.

Hi, I just had a little response. We had those same ideas from doctors before we got the AS diagnosis. I'm not totally familiar with autism but I thought with autism children don't interact well with other people. For instance eye contact or affection or any close contact. With my daughter she is extremly affectionate and interacts very well with others( sometimes inappropriatly so, like hugging strangers and so forth), so the doctors usually threw out the idea with autism. I thought most children with AS were very affectionate, but mabey it's just that all kids are different. I definatly don't think AS is as rare as they assume. I think alot go miss diagnosed. We also had trouble in school getting the things my daughter needed. They would not even approve occupational therapy until she had a diagnosis. All the red tape is terrible, I believe if the child needs it, they should get it. Definate diagnosises sometimes take forever or if they come at all and the child should be
entitled to all the sevices in the meantime!
        Anyway Good Luck to you!!!

from what i've read, the children can have autistic like symptoms and are usually severely mentally impaired. so are the majority of your classic autistic children. i think there may be some confusion there. has your child been positively diagnosed as having angelmans through genetic testing?

through the exact same thing, sometimes I get angry because instead
of getting answers I'm answering the questions it really sucks, like
we don't have enoungh with the "egular poeple" asking "What's wrong
with your kid"?-I feel like the doctorsw should get more infromed,
you know I've thought about doing something crazy, becuase I know a
lot of kids have probably gone miss or un-diagnosed, My son goes to
class with a news anchor here in Fresno and I have seriosly thought
of asking him to help me out bring Angelmans Syndrome to the public
here in my town. I loved that report on CNN but I know a lot of
poeple either don't have cable or just did'nt watch it. ANY OTHER

able to talk! Isabella can get really creative trying
to make you understand. She started getting books out
(on her own mind you) to point to a picture of a toy
or something she wanted. She understands everything we
                say, she just can't talk!

AMEN TO THAT!!!!!!!!!! Our kids are smarter than the average bear!!! The term mentally retarded is so harsh and does not compliment our angels or anyone else who is delayed in whatever area. Creative about almost everything they do, so how can that be retarded. I hate that word, but as said in the past, if the mental health agencies have to use that term to get our son the services he so deserves, then I tend to tolerate it, but that is the only time!!

Hi, I so agree, mentally retarded? I think our kids
have to be really smart to communicate without being
able to talk! Isabella can get really creative trying
to make you understand. She started getting books out
(on her own mind you) to point to a picture of a toy
or something she wanted. She understands everything we
                    say, she just can't talk!
