Group Description

The European Youth Parliament (EYP) is an international non-governmental and non-political association established in 1987. Previously a part of the Fontainebleau Youth Foundation, EYP is now a programme administered by the German Heinz Schwarzkopf Stiftung, which, besides the EYP, offers other educational opportunities to young people from all over Europe, as well. To find out more about their projects, initiatives and scholarships, visit http://www.heinz-schwarzkopf-stiftung.de.

The coolest parliament around acts as a forum giving young people, aged 16 to 22 years, a chance to discuss current European issues and thus works on developing a culture of constructive dialogue, inspiring critical thinking and encouraging students to take an active stand towards their society.

Teaching young people to defend their stances with concise and valid arguments in a constructive debate is an extremely important aspect of our work. Openness to discussion and good will to accept the opinions of others as valid is exactly what makes people’s opinions all the more valuable. Unwillingness to be open-minded in a debate creates a barrier to the discussion and undermines the trust among committee members, especially if one tries to force his or her opinion on others. Indirectly, EYP also encourages students to meet other cultures, other young people and enhance their language skills. Through interaction students realise cultural, national, political, race and gender differences are a treasure to be cherished and in no way a threat to be feared.
