      Bill,

Remember that in political seasons past the Democrats had their own preachers running in presidential primaries, swarthier in complextion, but no less vulgar than rightist fundamentalists. This too shall pass. Shame of it, though, is what might have been, say, your fellow Midwesterner Senator Hagel, or Governor Lamm.

As I try to fathom the motives of these eccentric politicoes I keep hearing rumors of The Chicago Mercantile Exchange as being the birth place for these bomb throwers. I truly regrett the cowardice of this administration in not confronting the rural right in the Senate, The whole saga of democratic capitulation and lazyness is responsible for the sorry mess we are in today. At least the tea baggers got out there and shook it up. Obama won and every one just walked away and let the right rule. I find it difficult to rally for the moderates when it seems all they will do is non preform.
      > Fareed Zacharia did a short piece on the disparity between US and European work habits. We American are prisioners of our senseless work habits. Our productivity is about the same as Europe but the days we work are way out of line. We are sheep tied to too much labor and totally cowed by the bosses. Labor is corrupt and the police are fat and bought. The timid young just obey with no objection. As long as the europeans can fool us into providing defense for their socialist experment we will slave and they will go on holiday. There is no reason France ,Italy and Germany cannot fight the low intessity conflicts of assemetrical war. Yet it is easier to let the US spend its treasure and give it to contractors while ignoring the real needs of its people and the countrys infrastrcture. Guns or Butter? I say fair amounts of both. Let the europeans pay their fair share and put the contractors to use at home. They can build roads and sewers here in USA just as they are supposidly are in Afganistan. I understand it is much easier to steal the cash over there. Bill

        Jim,

You overlook the advantages of your parliamentary system. With our two-party, winner takes all elections, different platforms and perspectives are obliterated from public discourse by the exigencies of running for office. I suspect you have less gridlock. With only two choices, we're forced to expect policies we despise and equal opposition to those we embrace. This is how idiotic candidate are elected by idiotic voters with idiotic results, to use Bill's parlance.
