New file posted: An extremely well-written and thought-provoking
essay by Lewis Smedes titled "Like the Wideness of the Sea"
[see "Smedes.pdf" in the Files section]. In his essay, Smedes
compares the Christian church's former stand on divorce and
remarriage with its current stand on homosexuality. Smedes, as some
may know, spent over 50 years studying the Bible. For 25 years, he
was on full-time staff at Fuller Theological Seminary, where he
served as chairman of the department of theology and ethics. In
2001, he was honored with the creation of the Lewis B. Smedes Chair
of Christian Ethics at Fuller. The theological seminary professor
emeritus was also the author of over a dozen best-selling Christian
books and continued to think, write and speak on the topic of
homosexuality up until his death in 2002. When Smedes died last
year, Fuller Theological Seminary president Richard J. Mouw
said: "He embodied a unique blend of intellectual rigor, pastoral
warmth and eloquent expression. More than one of his former students
has said that while his class lectures were unforgettable, it was
worth coming to class just to hear his opening prayer."

      Enjoy!
