OK, I'm setting my alarm so I don't forget. See you tomorrow - hopefully you'll be inspired to create your own ESL-oriented film reviews and we can have a whole collection. Even better, how about a Siskel and Ebert kind of thing sometime live? Anyone interested?

      Hi, Teresa, Joao, and Michael,

These photos remind me of the wonderful visit my friend Joan and I had with Teresa and Joao in 2009. Obidos was one of my favorite places to visit, and I, too, loved the liquor served up in chocolate cups. Michael, enjoy your time there.

      Hugs!

Do any of you have experience with a new type of software called WhiteSmoke Writer<http://www.whitesmo ke.com/whitesmok e-writing- software. html>? Hello everyone.

Lisbon is quite magical - such a pretty place. Charm and heritage everywhere.

Yes today was Teresa's birthday! We met for coffee this afternoon

      (http://www.flickr. com/photos/ teresadeca/ 5885886548/) before Teresa went off

for a birthday dinner with her family.

Bee - my presentation was not streamed. I did however make my own recording

of it and I shall try and get it up online over the next day or so.

As I invited myself to this conference ( i.e. NOT an invited speaker) I got

no special treatment and had to use an ancient computer that struggled to use

a browser and Powerpoint at the same time! My presentation was on Nicholas

Carr's book - What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains. I had all of 12

people attend. However I still think this is an important topic that needs

      to be aired.

I shall keep an eye out for Cristiana.

      - Michael

Hi Michael and all in Lisbon

I like the conference attire as evidenced in the photos

      and Happy Birthday to Teresa!

I look forward to hearing your recording of your talk on the Shallows

You mentioned some time ago that we should discuss this book at one of our

weekly Sunday http://learning2get her.pbworks. com sessions and consequently

I've been reading it, in preparation.

David Winet is presenting this Sunday July 3 and Graham Stanley is

presenting from Webheads HQ in SL on July 24, but all other dates

e.g. Sunday July 10, 17, 31 and into August, etc. are available.

When the dust settles there and you're back on home turf, let's schedule a

time to air this discussion, as you put it.

And for everyone else reading this, we KNOW you have something to share with

us, why not come online Sunday at or around 1300 GMT (give or take a day or

two) and we can discuss your issue or passion or success in teaching.

      Hope to hear from you,

      Vance

A couple years ago (?), a teacher posted here with a complaint. I think she

was in Canada (?) and her school told her that instead of continuing to

teach in the traditional way face-to-face with her students, they wanted her

and her colleagues at this school to develop online lessons. There was also

some problem about the salary, perhaps it was going to be less for this job.

I'm wondering if that teacher is still on this list and if she could provide

      an update to her experience.

      Message 2 of 3 , Jul 2, 2011
        Thanks Dave,

for reminding ME to announce that Sunday July 3 -
David Winet has offered to tell us more about his technique of ESL-ifying reviews of video trailers on YouTube.
        At http://groups.yahoo.com/group/evonline2002_webheads/message/27682 he says:

        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6wgacoTJ3E
I made this clip after watching a video film review with my students and realizing that watching the trailer while listening to the reviewer is much more engaging to the student than just hearing or reading the review. I "ESL-ified" the review by speaking slowly, using simple vocabulary, and glossing words and expressions both orally and using Youtube's annotation feature (which can be turned on or off). Exercises, discussion questions could easily be added.

The technique I used is as follows:
Go to http://www.hd-trailers.net to download a trailer (I was unable to download this POC clip using the more common Youtube download methods -- perhaps there was some kind of block on commercial movie trailers)
Convert the downloaded trailer to .avi (if it's .flv or .mov, etc.). Use http://www.Pazeera-software.com tools or find your own free 'something to .avi converter' online.
Load the .avi file into Moviemaker version 2.6 (available at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=d6ba5972-328e-4df\7-8f9d-068fc0f80cfc )
Click Tools/Narrate Timeline to add your spoken commentary on the voice track (over the video sound track). Prepare some notes so it flows better.
Click Tools/Audio Levels to make the movie soundtrack softer than your voice.
This is key! Save the movie as .avi (Save to my computer)
Upload to Youtube (you'll need a Youtube account - free)
In Youtube add annotations as desired (see Youtube help for how to do this, it's not hard)
Get the link and post it on Facebook, Twitter, here, etc.

        We hope you can attend.

        But also, HELP!!
We need presenters for Sunday July 10, 17, 31 and into August, etc.
If you can make a presentation, please let us know,

A colleague of mine just heard about it from a student who used it on his third draft of an essay, which was phenomenally improved over drafts 1 and 2. We have ordered it on review for our program.

          Hi everyone,

Dave gave a great presentation yesterday as you can tell from visiting (wait for it! ...) our new ... (drum rolllll ) PODCAST

Yes, I've finally sorted through a set of tools that would allow me to start putting some mp3s from Learning 2gether up on the web so you can subscribe to the feed and listen to them the way I do other podcasts ...

          The tools are ...
          1. Elluminate to make the recordings (THANKS Learning Times!)
          2. Elluminate Publish! which is not free but has a generous one month free trial version to let you render the sound track of an Elluminate recording in a couple of minutes. If you've ever used Audacity to do this you'll appreciate the quantum leap in time savings.
          3. Posterous actually lets you upload the media there. Blogger will podcast a URL I believe but you've got to store it somewhere first.
          4. Google Feedburner, which generates RSS feeds for you and has a click box for "I'm a podcaster" so you'll get a feed that feeds you mp3s.

So check out http://learning2gether.posterous.com/ for all the mp3s I've been able to get online up to now and (this is the best part :-) Subscribe to the podcast at this feed:
          http://feeds.feedburner.com/posterous/l2gcast

And there you will find all the links to David Winet's recorded artifacts: http://learning2gether.posterous.com/david-winet-explains-his-technique-of-esl-ify

And you can leave comments if you wish
(and Dave, if you'll remind me the link to the right video I'll correct the link that's there)

          Vance
