      Dear Carlos:

I admire Portuguese teachers' willingness and force to fight against unfair educational policies. Venezuelans have a lot to learn from you. We might be probably marching soon, too. We have two Ministers of Education, one for elementary and secondary schools and another one for higher education. They both are strictly following the commands of our president to 'socialize' our education. To many of us 'socialism' means 'comunism'. Things are getting darker every day. All elementary and secondary school teachers are receiving mandatory courses for the new 'socialist education'. Most of them don't agree, but if they don't attend the courses they can be fired. The new curriculum includes military and political formation, and our 40 democracy years disappeared from the new official history books. English and Spanish teachers have to teach different languages (probably Portuguese because of our close location to Brasil) plus other school subjects, no mater if they are prepared
or not. They call this new teacher an 'integral teacher'.

On the other side, the Minister of Higher Education intends to eliminate the state universities' admission policies, so students won't take either entrance or proficiency tests. How come! That's crazy!!! 'According to the government 'everybody has the right to enter Venezuelan universities. They can't continue working under the power of the oligarchy.' Uhmmm, I forsee that teachers and parents will start the' battle' very soon. I'd love to see 100.000 teachers or more marching in the streets as in Portugal.

In spite of all this caos, teachers have to continue doing our best.

      Warm regards,

      Evelyn

You seem a bit more optimistic than we around here... Although the
march was good as it brought us closer than ever before, the Minister
keeps the same speech, although a bit more open... we will probably
some more tem marches to make her listen...

Anyway, thank you for your kind words and a Happy Easter...
      Carlos
