Better question: why do people whistle?
- Please, gentlemen, your assumptions--or biases---are showing. Men are not
the only humans who whistle.
Despite proverbs discouraging the habit (and the English saying is:
Whistling girls and crowing hens always come to some bad end) females do
whistle with great pleasure, and sometime artistry.
The reason? Perhaps a mixture of whatever prompts us to make music, and
the desire to signal. When I was growing up the loudest whistle in the
neighborhood belonged to the woman next door who would whistle a sliding
two or three notes (can't remember how many) to indicate to her kids that
it was time to come home.
