One of the most striking differences between science and other pursuits is
social. If you want to get ahead in the humanities, you must do things that
please the priesthood (i.e. those who are best acquainted with the internal
technical details of the discipline). But if you want to get ahead in
science, you must do things that piss the priesthood off.

To do that, you show that they were wrong. To do that, you appeal to
experiments or observations that everyone can see, that are repeatable, and
      so on.

Every technical discipline has its priests, but the mark of true science is
that they are answerable to the world, and upstarts, and laymen, rather
      than just other priests.
