- Jan 31, 2018I hesitated to reply to John Von Heyking's gracious solicitation until I saw Fritz Wagner's response.Fritz can't speak with "forked tongue," and is always interesting. Fritz is one hundred percent right. This project starts from the wrong premise.Anyone proposing a history of the world ought to read Russell Kirk's Roots of American Order that examines the origins of Western civilization and focuses on the influence of the history of the West in shaping the political order of the United States. Not "world history," please. Two of my academic colleagues and I did our little part to clear away some of the intellectual debris that afflicts us with "Global" history and citizenship. You can preview the first part of our course on our "roots" in Western civilization at www.mooc3.com. Attached are some of the "Historical Timelines" from that course and a Glossary to assist our students' understanding.I should add that I've read Dawson and he's not in Voegelin's league.Dick Bishirjian757 362 3145On Wednesday, January 31, 2018 10:43 AM, "Frederick Wagner fjjwagner@... I read Winston Churchill when I was 10 and don’t see any reason why the prose has to be homogenized by hovering editors. They want to call it: Meaning and Purpose in History: The Spiritual and Pragmatic History of the Human Race. Why not call it: The Journey of Mankind: Spirit and Flesh in Peace and War?And let there be a firm resolve to use Anglo-Saxon words whenever possible, because with them it is harder to fool oneself and the reader. And let us use the active voice too, for it is often thought inimical to continuous concentrated subject consideration if a concatenation of clausal passivity is prolongated.Good luck and Success to the writer who takes this on!Fritz WagnerOn Jan 30, 2018, at 3:30 PM, 'von Heyking, John' john.vonheyking@... John von Heyking, Ph.D.Begin forwarded message:From: History Project <HistoryProject@...>Subject: Job Opportunity re Eric Voegelin: Please ForwardDate: January 29, 2018 at 3:51:40 PM MSTDear Dr. Von Heyking,
It is my pleasure to introduce an exciting writing project to you and ask if you might know of a scholar capable of and interested in taking it on. The project is to write a two-volume set of middle school world history textbooks, tentatively entitled . The project is inspired by the work of Eric Voegelin and Christopher Dawson, and as a Member of the Board of Advisors of VoegelinView you may know someone who would be a good candidate for the project.
The textbooks that come out of this project will teach students about the human condition and about human experience over time, including the spiritual dimension of that experience in all of the major world civilizations. The textbooks will break with the contemporary climate of intellectual opinion that treats religion as a secondary social phenomenon; instead, spiritual experience and religious practice will be recognized as a primary constituent of human experience and the source of meaning in every civilization. Young people today hunger for meaning and purpose, and this project will help them fill that yawning need.
I have attached two documents. The first is a project overview, which lays out the project in detail, including the motivation behind the project, the target market, the goals for the textbooks, target length and readability, and how to apply. The second is a one-page Table of Contents for the two textbooks followed by an expanded Table of Contents that lays out the scope of the writing project. No one person can be an expert on all the material that will be covered by the textbooks, but that is OK because these are middle-school textbooks.
The project will be funded by the Institute of Reading Development (IRD) and will be published by IRD when completed. IRD partners with more than 100 universities and colleges nationwide to offer a variety of reading development and literature programs for students of all ages. More than two million students have participated in these programs since 1970. (See: readingprograms..org; literatureprograms.org; greatbooksreadingprograms.org)
If you know of a qualified scholar who may be interested in writing this set of textbooks, please forward this email to him or her. Please feel free to contact me about the project. Thank you for your time and consideration..
