double struck elliptical clip or strike clip
- Here an interesting combo error:
It's either an elliptical clip or an elliptical strike clip that was
struck twice, with the coin being struck into another planchet on the
second strike. You'll notice that the obverse and reverse are not in
alignment. The obverse was nestled against the collar on one side,
while the reverse contacted the collar only at its "points".
Evidently the coin shifted between the first and second strikes.
Also the reverse shows the normal texture of a die-struck surface,
while the obverse shows the grainy texture of a uniface strike.
I've actually seen a number of Canadian cents like this, some as
members of intact mated pairs.
