      It's either an elliptical clip or an elliptical strike clip that was
      struck twice, with the coin being struck into another planchet on the
      second strike. You'll notice that the obverse and reverse are not in
      alignment. The obverse was nestled against the collar on one side,
      while the reverse contacted the collar only at its "points".
      Evidently the coin shifted between the first and second strikes.
      Also the reverse shows the normal texture of a die-struck surface,
      while the obverse shows the grainy texture of a uniface strike.

      I've actually seen a number of Canadian cents like this, some as
      members of intact mated pairs.
