      Ive posted in the multi strikes album, pics of a GA quarter that was
      struck in collar, then struck again, 50% overlapping a blank
      planchet. The expansion of the lettering around the periphery is
      unusual in that there are no signs of expansion stretch marks where
      the metal was squeezed out to this much larger size. Any ideas on the
      movements of the metal, relative to the contact with the die, by the
      millisecond? In other words, how did the lettering get larger without
      any evidence of having been touched?

        I see this effect all the time in cents with similar-sized indents on
        the second strike. The blank planchet causes the underlying coin to
        expand before the die even reaches it. By the time the die does
        contact the coin, the peripheral lettering has moved out of the way.
        It is therefore completely untouched.
