tilted die error
- Here is a link to the Martha Washington "test strike" on a cent
In addition to everything else, this coin shows all the
characteristics of a massive vertical misalignment of the obverse
(hammer) die (tilted die error). It may not be an off-center strike
in the strict sense. Any die tilted to this degree will angle in
toward the center of the planchet. Thus any coin struck by the die
will have the appearance of an off-center strike, even if it was
perfectly centered over the anvil die.
I would dearly love to see any business strike with a vertical
misalignment this severe.
