Finicky eater / long story
- My horse Beau has become more finicky about eating and is starting to look thin to me. Of course we are coming out of winter and he always tends to lose weight then. He is older, in his early to mid twenties probably. He has Cushings, HYPP positive, arthritic ( walks stiffly.) He had Lymes but was treated successfully. Is on Pergolide for his Cushings, Cosequin ASU for his arthritis, on Cyproheptadine for his allergies which I forgot to mention.
He has problems with a fungal infection in his eye which wouldn't heal until the vet figured out he had Cushings. We give him powdered aspirin for his eye that still tends to flare up and hurt him. I won't even go into the puncture wound he sustained back in December on his pastern. That is still healing over with a scab and it's now May 1st ! He went to the hospital for that injury. $6000 later he seems like a much older horse. That leads me to reexamine what to feed him. I've tried low starch, which he hates to Purina Equine Senior. He liked it for a while till we messed with it and added medicines. We tried hiding it in apples or whatever he likes but he catches on. We have to soak half a hamburger bun in Pergolide so he will take that. He adores hamburger buns.
Its wearing out the woman who boards him for me out. I live an hour away so it's hard for me to help much from afar. Bottom line, he needs to eat and to enjoy what he eats so he will look and feel better. It's hard with all his conditions. he shouldn't have a lot of sugar because of his problems but he does with sweet feed, beet pulp. He should not have a lot of potassium because of his HYPP status. That's why we have trouble finding a good feed. Same problem with vitamin mineral supplements, high potassium. He is a tough cookie. This is long and I'm sure I have probably forgotten to list something else that ails him. We try so hard to figure out what to do to get him on track. Sorry this is so lengthy. BTW, we tried corn oil on his feed as the vet suggested to fatten him up......he hates it.
