Cheaper and easier; put cayenne pepper powder in your bird feed. Birds can't taste it (no calcium receptors in their mouths) and squirrels, rats and mice will

I don't think taking the (worthless) butts back is the point here, as it is for cans and bottles, which should be recycled for their valuable raw materials.
