      Sir,
In Hyderabad many builders are using stone dust directly or mixing with natural sand for RC works as well as masonry works. But plastering may give cracks.
Even DSR-2007 ITEMS are available using cement mortar prepared with cement and stone dust for pointing, plastering, flooring work etc

      Hi Srinivas, Sanjay and all,

Both dust and washed crusher sand are available in market. The idea of specifically pointing out this matter was to avoid confusion to those who are not in the known. Then again, name matters many a times. You can go for the right thing in the first place itself,no. This also avoids rework and resulting time delay etc.

CPWD and PWD specs are specific that dust should not be used for mortar and concrete works and that washed crusher sand with proper grading, abrasive strength, flakiness coeff. etc. should only be used. There is a significant rate difference between the two items also.

The whole idea of writing this is to bring facts to the notice of engineers and not for a debate.

      Regards,

      Well said ibrahim ,

stone dust cannot be used in any case as substitute for any concrete works.
and Mr sanjay , name  is decided with help of properties/grading  only.  so we cant say what to do with name.

may be im wrong  but  cpwd, pwd n all dont allow dust (because name dust says very fine which properties doesnt match with natural river, or any fine aggregate which is used concrete works)

      Dear:

What is in a "Name". See the property, Dust / Sand must qualify property test. Fillers - Finedust,Flysh, Cement can not perform that function n would disqualify in grading test. If you are talking about "Finedust", It will sureshot disqualify the test, n would not be permitted nor advisable in any circumstances.

      Hi All,

It is not stone dust, but crushed stone sand that can be used. Same is the case for concrete works too. CPWD and PWDs are allowing use of crushed stone aggregates in masonry and concrete works. Please refer DSR for details. IS 383 and IS 2386 may also be referred.

      Regards,

You can use stone dust instead of Natural river sand, subject properties / requirement of grading / other meet. See the Cl 4 Is 2116. See few other IS codes viz 456...
Pls be clear that "A fine aggregate is either a natural sand, crushed stone sand or crushed gravel sand" Attached few relevant.
