      1st May Elections
      April 28, 2003www.1924.org
Islam forbids giving sovereignty to secular political systems.

May 1st will see the British local elections for the assemblies of Scotland and Wales, as well as council elections for a large number of electoral wards across England.

The elections come hot on the heels of the liberation of Iraq by the coalition of the willing, headed by America and Britain. This year has seen a keen interest on the part of the main political parties in attracting the Muslim vote. Weary of the impact of the Iraq war on the Muslim community, politicians MPs and councillors have been hastily working to win Muslim backing.

Furthermore, this year marks a new edge in the campaign to win the hearts and minds. The political parties, government and opposition alike, have openly seen the need to reach out to the Muslims by mobilising Muslim leaders, often in the form of businessmen, Muslim groups and imams.

Before addressing the Islamic view, hence the way in which the Muslim community needs to view the upcoming elections. The following points need to be understood:

      • All the political parties, whether Labour, Conservatives, Liberal Democrats or otherwise are secular parties. These parties are based upon the concept of separating religion from life. The secular politicians are all unified upon the belief that the Creator should have no say and no impact upon the societal affairs. The scope of the Creator is relegated to the personal and spiritual fields.

      • The system in Western societies is firmly based upon this secular ideal. Hence all those wishing to work within the system by joining the political process are locked in the secular political process.

      • The blood of the Muslims of Iraq has yet to dry but the secular political parties are seeking the Muslim vote. All the political parties accepted the killing of Muslims, whether overtly by putting their party backing behind the Iraq war or covertly by uniting behind what they called our troops. Most notably, the Liberal Democrat position was comical. Their principle-less stance opened the door for the brutal murder of our brothers and sisters albeit with the greatest restraint.

      • All the political parties are unified on the future construct of Iraq. This future construct is a secular, demilitarised state that serves Western interests. All the Western political parties are unified that Iraq can never become an Islamic State, even though the desire of the majority of Muslims is to have Islam. Instead, they openly call to impose their Western secular ideology upon the Muslim Ummah.

      • The Muslims within the Western political parties, regardless of their sincerity and desire to do good, are being used to achieve their goals and aspirations. The Western political parties, of all shades, all desire for the Muslims to leave their politics firmly based upon Islam and adopt the Western political traditions. This tradition turns the sincere Muslim into a Machiavellian politician, saying one thing to the Muslim community and another to their political leaders. This was clearly seen when Muslim groups, firmly linked to the government, referred to the British troops as our boys and opened their doors to allow the British Army and Security agencies to recruit Muslims.
As for the Islamic view on joining the political process and engaging in Western politics by becoming members of secular political parties, the view is clear - it is Haram without a shred of doubt.

      Allah (swt) says,

Have you seen those (hypocrites) who claim that they believe in that which has been sent down to you, and that which has been sent down before you, and they wish to go for judgment (in their disputes) to the Taghut (false judges) while they have been ordered to reject them. But Shaytan wishes to lead them far astray. [TMQ An-Nisa: 60]

In this ayah, Allah (swt) reproaches those who say they believe in the Kitab and Sunnah and believe in the former books, but despite this, they wish to refer to the Taghut. The systems of Kufr applied in the western countries do not merely stem from the Taghut, rather they are the Taghut itself. In origin, the Muslim must refuse and reject reference to these Kufr systems so as to adhere to what the ayah demands. So what about the one who goes beyond this and he becomes the one who rules by the rules of Kufr and implements them?

      Allah (swt) says,

And whosoever does not rule by what Allah has revealed, such are the Kafiroon (disbelievers). [TMQ Al-Maidah: 44].

      He (swt) says:

And whosoever does not rule by what Allah has revealed, such are the Zalimoon (unjust, oppressors). [TMQ Al-Maidah: 45]

      He (swt) says:

And whosoever does not rule by what Allah has revealed, such are the Fasiqoon (transgressors). [TMQ Al-Maidah: 47]

The word rule in these ayaat includes anyone who has power and authority, because he decides and executes the order, whether he is the head of state, prime minister or his assistants, such as the cabinet minister or anybody who derives his authority from him. Anyone who has the powers to decide and execute matters is included under the word rule in these and other such ayaat. So whoever decides and executes a matter in a manner that Allah (swt) has not permitted is ruling by other than what Allah (swt) revealed, whether he is ignorant or a scholar, whether he allows it due to an excuse or he seeks other than the law of Allah (swt) with conviction and acceptance. And also whether he himself is a ruler or his deputy. All these people rule by other than what Allah (swt) has revealed and they rule with Kufr systems and rules. The above ayaat apply to them despite the difference of Shara ruling regarding them. The one who rules by something other than what Allah (swt) has revealed due to ignorance and then comes to know of the Shareeah rule and does not change he will be sinful. And the one who rules by other than what Allah (swt) has revealed deliberately is one of two - but both will go to the Fire - a Kafir who is outside the Deen of Islam, if he is convinced of the correctness of his actions and he believes Islam is not suitable, or he is a wrongdoer and transgressor, if he still believes in the correctness of Islam and the correctness of its rules.

      He (swt) said:

Judge between them by that which Allah has revealed and follow not their desires and beware of them lest they seduce you from some part of that which Allah has revealed to you. [Al-Maidah: 49]

This is a definite order from Allah (saw) to His Messenger (saw) and the Muslims after him, especially the rulers, of the obligation to rule with the rules Allah (swt) has revealed, whether it is an order or a prohibition, and not to follow the whims and the desires, and to be careful not to neglect any order which Allah (swt) has revealed. Thus the one who seeks power in a Western state is turning away from the decisive order of Allah (swt) that obliges the ruling by what Allah (swt) has revealed, following his whims and desire and has been tempted into neglecting the command of Allah (swt).

These above ayahs clearly indicate the impermissibility of joining the Western political process. It is incorrect to state after this that some benefit can be achieved, so the benefit overtakes the harm. For Muslims follow the Halal and Haram as their criterion, not the benefit. It is also incorrect to argue that without joining the political process, the Muslims will have no voice and influence and will not be able to gain their rights, as defined by Islam. All of these arguments are incorrect, and are based upon the wrong premise.

The Muslims in Britain need to critically evaluate the call to participate in the political processes of the West. This call wishes to further the community away from Islam and accelerate the acceptance of Secularism as a basis for the Muslim political outlook. The Muslim community must resist this call.
