As Ramadan gets underway, ArtintheCity takes a look at the various cultural activities which will be happening in the next month, from exhibitions to film screenings.
Taking account of Ramadan, Funoon's 'Art Conversations' will be held at 9.30pm this month, and will see Sultan Sooud Al Qassemi speaking. Sultan Al Qassemi is a key figure in the UAE's art scene and is the founder of the Barjeel Art Foundation in Sharjah.
Many of you may remember the exhibition 'Muqtanayati' which took place in thejamjar in Autumn last year. Well it's making a return this October and is once again asking people to submit objects which relate to their journey in the UAE. Read our feature to find out more about submitting an object.
Also making a return this year is the Sheikha Manal Young Artist Award, which is now in its fifth year. The competition is currently open for submissions until November 2011, calling to talented young artists based in the UAE.
Over in Qatar, Mathaf presents 'Swalif: Qatari Art between Memory and Modernity'. The museum's second exhibition will start on 14 August and will showcase the pioneering artists who have helped to shape the Qatari art lanscape.
The holy month of Ramadan is upon us and with it come a flurry of events throughout August to celebrate this time. Most shopping malls go nocturnal and stay open until the early hours, and of course there are the opulent festivities of Iftar, with hotels across the UAE laying out a feast each evening...
‘Art Conversations’ is a monthly series of open discussions on Art facilitated by leading luminary art experts from the local and international art scene. The series are being organised by Funoon, the art & culture division of Dubai Ladies Club, to provide a platform for the exchange of ideas and expertise...
October 2011 will see the return of ‘Muqtaniyati’, an exhibition that met with great success when it took place at thejamjar in 2010. Curated by Sonia Brewin and Rachael Brown, the inaugural edition of ‘Muqtaniyati’ invited inhabitants of the UAE to submit objects which they felt had a link to their journey in this country...
