      In explaining how to set up nXML the readme file says the following:

      Well at least as of Emacs 22.2 that needs because the slashes need to be escaped.

        ... To get it to work the way it is supposed to, the line in the .emacs file needs to be written like: (load .. nxml-mode-20041004 rng-auto.el ) ...not...

          To get it to work the way it is supposed to, the line in the .emacs file
          needs to be written like:

          (load "..\\nxml-mode-20041004\\rng-auto.el")

          ...not...

          (load "..\nxml-mode-20041004\rng-auto.el")

            But you can use forward slashes instead:

            (load "../nxml-mode-20041004/rng-auto.el")
