So everybody hates the term "Electronica." We know, but "Electronic Music" takes too long to type and "Dance Music" sounds lame. Electronic musical experimentation remained in the avant garde of American and European music until the 1970s when bands like Kraftwerk and producers like Brian Eno rose to prominence. Meanwhile in Jamaica the DJ soundsystem culture had been developing and thriving for years. Technological advances, the death of Disco (as a consumer phenomenon) and the rise of Hip Hop and Punk spurred the creation of DIY dance music and the DJ. Underground clubs in New York, London and Detroit began playing a new type of music that soon went global and has quickly fragmented into an infinite number of styles and subgenres. This encompasses all sampler, computer and turntable based music except Hip Hop.
