      MARKET RANGE TITLE: Educator

      DEPARTMENT: Parks & Recreation

      LOCATION: The Desert Outdoor Center at Lake Pleasant is a Maricopa
      County Park located in Peoria, Arizona, approximately 30 miles north
      of Phoenix. Environmental education is the facility's primary focus.
      The Center's programs reach approximately 20,000 schoolchildren per

      PURPOSE STATEMENT: The purpose of the position is to provide
      interpretive/educational guidance to park visitors.

      This job may include the following job duties and is not an
      all-inclusive list of all job duties that may be required. Employees
      will be required to perform other related duties as assigned.

      Plans, implements, schedules, and leads educational programs,
      including events, displays, classes, lectures, campfire talks, hikes,
      rides, tours, and outreach presentations: 60%

      Plans, designs, constructs, sets up display and interpretive
      materials, maintains and demonstrates display animals and plants: 10%

      Develops and monitors supply and equipment needs and budget: 2%

      Enlists, trains, schedules, and supervises other staff and volunteers: 3%

      Conducts research, keeps accurate records and provides various reports: 10%

      Obtains interpretive and resource information for use in creating
      brochures, articles, audio-visual, newsletters, and displays: 5%

      Answers questions about and interprets park features, geography,
      flora, fauna, and geology. Upholds park rules, safety activities, and
      operations: 10%

      A. Supervision Received: Under general supervision of a Park
      Supervisor performs the duties of Park Educator. Requires independent
      decision-making and self-direction.
      Standards and objectives are set by management policies and guidelines.

      B. Supervision Exercised: May supervise newly hired Park Educators
      and provide guidance in conducting original training programs.
      Coordinates the activities of park hosts and other volunteers.


      A. Internal: Works daily with Park Supervisors, MCSO Trails Division
      and maintenance personnel.

      B. External: Is a focal point of customer contact at the parks,
      both in interpretive education as well as information regarding park
      regulations and safety.


      A. Minimum education and/or experience: The minimum level of
      education and experience to qualify for this position is a Bachelor's
      Degree in a Biological Science field (Natural Resources, Education, or
      closely related field). An equivalent combination of education and
      years of experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills and
      abilities, may be substituted.

      B. Preferred education and/or experience: Ideal candidate will
      possess experience and education in natural sciences, natural
      resources management, plus experience in employee and volunteer
      supervision and budget planning. Computer graphics experience,
      experience with audiovisual equipment, some experience handling wild
      animals, and experience in a camp setting is helpful.

      C. Preferred education and/or experience: Preference may be given to
      candidates with experience in desk top publishing programs or

      D. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The ideal candidate will possess
      significant experience and education in natural sciences, natural
      resources management, plus experience in volunteer supervision and
      some budget planning. The position requires a thorough knowledge of
      the theories, principles and techniques of education; knowledge of the
      scientific subject matter covered by the program; strong written
      communication, presentation, organizational, time management and
      interpersonal skills; computer skills necessary to produce
      newsletters, brochures, teaching aids and other miscellaneous
      documents; ability to provide work direction and motivate
      subordinates; ability to teach people of all age groups. Must
      demonstrate proficiency with MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel)

      E. Specialized training, certifications, or other special
      requirements: Must have a valid Arizona Drivers License at time of
      hire. CPR/First Aid Certification at time of hire or within 6 months
      of hire. A thorough background check and fingerprinting are required
      once an offer has been extended and prior to placement.

      F. Preferred special requirements: Preference may be given to
      candidates who are Certified Parks and Recreation Professionals (CPRP)

      G. Special working conditions: This position may require working
      nights, weekends and holidays.
