      This is an in-person course for Tucson-area middle and high school teachers/counselors.
       

      The University of Arizona

      Writing Skills improvement Program’s

      2012 Summer Institute for Writing and Thinking

      Teacher Fact Sheet:

       

       

      1.     Targeted for middle and secondary school teachers (and counselors) from all schools in Tucson

       

      2.     All interested teachers are welcome to apply.

       

      3.      Program is FREE: selected teachers receive 3 graduate credits and have tuition and fees paid for participation in the program and a stipend.

       

      4.     Meets from July 9-27th,  Monday through Friday, from 9:00 to 3:00 daily.

       

      5.     Teachers also attend a kickoff workshop on July 5th and 6th to orient them to the program and prepare them for working with students and program faculty.

       

      6.     Teachers gain practical and theoretical understanding of how writing accelerates learning in all content areas, gain understanding of ways that writing improves maintenance of skills in all subjects, and develop strategies for tapping students’ writing potential.

       

      7.     Teachers take a graduate seminar, English 597O, “Seminar in Writing and Thinking  Across the Curriculum,” which focuses on applying current composition theories and practices to the teaching of writing to students in all subject areas.

       

      8.     To apply, teachers need to fill out an application, write a page explaining why they’d like to attend, and get a letter of recommendation from a principal or department head from their school.

       

      9.     Visit the Writing Skills website at http://wsip.web.arizona.edu  under “High School Outreach,”  “Teacher Information and Application.”

      Application deadline is April 27, 2012.
