      Site Description

      The Sandia Mountain Natural History Center (SMNHC) is a year-round
      environmental education resource located in the Sandia Mountains, near Cedar
      Crest, NM, outside of Albuquerque. Annually, 10,000+ students and teachers
      are served by the educators of the SMNHC. Programs include the full-day
      hands-on Ecology Field Program, teacher workshops, outreach presentations
      around New Mexico and programs for the general public. The SMNHC is run by
      the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science (NMMNHS) and is owned
      by Albuquerque Public Schools.


      Most of the work assignments are based at the SMNHC although some is at the
      NMMNHS in Albuquerque. Transport is often available to the SMNHC from the

      Responsibilities include:

      Lead daily 4-5 hour environmental education programs for 25 5th grade
      students, including hikes lasting two hours.

      Conduct a project in field of study to benefit the SMNHC.

      Other special projects as assigned.


      Working towards Bachelors Degree in Environmental Science, Education,
      Biology, Ecology or other applicable area.

      Desire to work with youth in the outdoors

      Ability to do physical labor and hikes at elevations of 7,000+ feet


      $6 per hour.

      16 hour work week

      Gain great teaching experience, including NMMNHS training and continuing

      Free admission to NMMNHS & programs


      Mid August to mid May


      Work directly with the SMNHC manager.
