      AISES Offers Exciting Travel Scholarship and Mentoring Opportunity to Students Attending Tribal Colleges!

      AISES with the generous support of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is launching a new project entitled:  Strengthening Successful Transition from TCUs to 4-Year Institutions and Graduate Institutions.  With NASA funding,AISES will provide support to five (5) students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields that attend Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs), in order to support and encourage their successful transition to four-year institutions, and to provide a framework for continuing their research. The goal of this project is to create a support network for TCU-based students, and provide forums for research to be presented, and for mentoring and leadership development.


      Programming Components

      1.    Access to the National Native STEM Community and Access to Mentors -The selected scholars will be introduced to undergraduate students attending mainstream institutions, graduate student mentors, and professional mentors. The scholars (protégés) will be formally matched with a mentor or mentors that most closely meet their mentoring needs and interests.

      These mentoring cohorts will be connection to each other using AISES' online   mentoring tool to foster communication year-round.


      2.    Professional and Leadership Development - 2014 Leadership Summit.  The scholars will receive travel scholarships to attend the 2014 Leadership Summit, being held March 20-22, 2014 at the Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort and Spa - Santa Ana Pueblo, NM, where they will be connected to others within the AISES student and professional leadership, gain leadership and personal development skill building resources, and potentially connect to their mentors.

      3.     2014 AISES National Conference.  The selected scholars will receive support to enable them to attend the 2014 AISES National Conference being held in Orlando, Florida in October 2014.  This will include up to $900 in scholarship monies which can be utilized to help cover students' round-trip airfare, lodging, and conference registration fees. 


      4.    Research Presentation Opportunity - 2014 National Conference.  The scholars will be introduced to a forum within which they can present their research at the AISES National Conference. Every year, AISES hosts between 100-250 pre-college, undergraduate and graduate students that present their research during the AISES National Conference.


      If the scholars are not currently engaged in research, they will observe the research being presented at the conference, and will be introduced to the student presenters whose research most closely aligns with their field of study. They will also be introduced to professionals at the conference for consideration of possible mentor-protégé relationship.

      Key deadlines for students to submit their research for consideration are outlined below.



      Eligible students must be attending a Tribal College or University and pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields.  Students must be enrolled as full-time students in their field of study during the Spring 2014 and Fall 2014 semesters/terms and able to commit to attending BOTH the Leadership Summit in March 2014 and the 2014 AISES National Conference in October 2014. 

      Applicants MUST meet all of the following criteria: 

      1.    Must have a 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or higher cumulative grade point average (GPA).  Latest Official Transcripts (issued by your school registrar's office) will be required.

      2.    Must be a full-time (12 credit hours or more) student at a tribal college or university, enrolled in a program leading to an academic degree (not a certificate) in a science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) field.

      3.    Must be a member of an American Indian tribe or otherwise considered to be an American Indian by the tribe with which affiliation is claimed; or is Alaskan Native; or considered to be an Alaskan Native by an Alaskan Native group to which affiliation is claimed; Official Documentation identifying the student as such must be provided.

      4.    Must be a member of AISES to apply.  To obtain an AISES membership go to http://www.aises.org/membership/
