      About us: GreatSchools, Inc. and its online media property,
      GreatSchools.net, is the nation's premier provider of K-12 school
      information. Our mission is to help parents choose the right school for
      their children, track school performance, support their children's
      education and solve school-related problems. We are an Internet-based
      nonprofit organization made possible by the generous support of
      foundations and corporations, including the Pisces Foundation, the
      William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and Washington Mutual, Inc. We are
      headquartered in downtown San Francisco. Our online guide to K-12
      schools is accessed at www.GreatSchools.net
      <http://www.greatschools.net/> and through co-branded partnerships with
      a growing list of major media properties such as the Los Angeles Times,
      Arizona Republic, and Knight Ridder/Real Cities Network. The
      GreatSchools.net Web site is currently growing 100% per year and has
      been used more than a million times by parents, educators and community
      leaders since its launch in 1998.

      Job description: Reporting to the CEO, the vice president of
      development will play a key role in building GreatSchools into the
      leading national source of school information for parents. Currently
      operating primarily in California and Arizona, GreatSchools intends to
      expand to at least 20 states over the next 3 years. The most important
      task of the VP of development is to build the relationships and raise
      the money necessary to support this state expansion program. Other
      responsibilities include developing alliances with education-related
      organizations, communicating with foundations, and analyzing potential
      new programs/ business models.

      Responsibilities

      * Identify and build relationships with school reform
      leaders, politicians, foundations and corporations around the country in
      support of our state expansion campaign
      * Write grant proposals and supervise part-time grant
      writer
      * Raise $1 million to $1.5 million during the first 12-18
      months to support the expansion of GreatSchools to at least 10
      additional states beyond California and Arizona
      * Work with the CEO to develop partnerships between
      GreatSchools and other leading national education-related organizations
      * Work with senior management to explore potential new
      programs/business models for GreatSchools in order to build
      "fee-for-service" income streams and improve the quality of our
      information for parents
      * Communicate with funders and partners to keep them
      appraised of the progress of GreatSchools; write grant reports and
      produce electronic and/or print newsletters/updates
      * Manage the development of the GreatSchools National
      Advisory Council, including leading educators and policymakers
      * Work with the CEO to cultivate and secure funding from
      major national foundation and corporate donors

      Requirements:

      * Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain
      relationships with high-level leaders in business, government or
      non-profit sectors
      * Experience with school reform, preferably efforts
      related to improving school accountability and/or increasing educational
      choices for parents
      * Experience working with foundations and corporations
      engaged in education issues; existing relationships with leaders in
      these organizations
      * Excellent writing and research skills, including
      experience researching and writing grants
      * At least three years of fundraising experience
      preferred, including securing funding of at least $300,000/year
      * Demonstrated ability to articulate and sell ideas to
      corporate and community leaders
      * Demonstrated ability to self-manage as well as work
      effectively with peers
