Teachers Wanted at Lighthouse Community Charter School

Join a talented group of educators and community members in a start-up
charter school, committed to educational equity for all children!

The Lighthouse Community Charter School, a new K-12 charter school opening
in the fall of 2002 in the Fruitvale-San Antonio neighborhood of Oakland, is
seeking applications for Kindergarten, 6th grade language arts/social
studies, Spanish, art, and P.E. teachers for the 2002-2003 school year.  We
are beginning our staff hiring process early so that we can invest and
involve all teachers as soon and as much as possible as we develop the
school's curriculum and education program during this planning year.

The mission of the Lighthouse Community Charter School (LCCS) is to prepare
a diverse, K-12 student population for higher education or the career of
their choice by equipping each child with the skills, knowledge, and tools
to become a self-motivated, competent, lifelong learner. To be fully
educated and prepared for the 21st century, we believe every child must
maintain a natural curiosity about the world, relentlessly pursue their
goals, construct and communicate knowledge, display personal and civic
responsibility, work collaboratively with others, and reflect consistently
on their growth as a learner.

      Guiding Principles:
In order for every child to reach his or her fullest potential, we believe:
      1. Every child must be held to high expectations for achievement,
      2. The school, families, and community must collaborate to meet the
cognitive, social, emotional, and physical needs of every child, and
      3. Teachers must be engaged in ongoing professional development and
reflection that is focused to meet the needs of all students.

      Teacher Qualifications:
      Required:
-- 2 years teaching experience for K and 6th grade positions
-- some teaching experience for Spanish, Art, and P.E. positions
-- Evidence indicating credential work in process for K and 6th grade
      positions
      Desired:
--California BCLAD or CLAD Teaching Credential
--Bachelor of Arts or Science degree in subject area
      --Experience with diverse, urban populations
--Demonstrated commitment to the design and development of the LCCS in its
      start up years
--Bilingual in Spanish, Cantonese, or Mien*

      * The LCCS seeks to select and hire a staff that reflects the community of
students and families we serve, which would include language experience in
Spanish, Mien, and Cantonese.  People of color are strongly encouraged to
      apply.
