      About College Summit CALIFORNIA...
      College Summit is a national non-profit organization that is nearly doubling the college enrollment rate of low-income students.  First, we target academically mid-tier students whose college promise is better than their scores would suggest.  Second, working with local coalitions of high schools, colleges, and corporations, we condense the six-month college application process into a four-day, on-campus workshop, in which students can present their whole selves to colleges.   Finally, we strengthen systems on both sides of the college access bridge:  training high schools teachers to play the management role that college-experienced parents play, and helping colleges evaluate whole people, not just scores.

      With leading support from The James Irvine Foundation, College Summit California will serve as the national test model for a process that changes the college-going culture in under-resourced high schools. 

      Position Description
      With significant support from College Summit National in Washington, D.C., the California Director will spearhead the work of College Summit's California satellite office.  Aiming to make California's Central Valley the national model for college access equity, the Director will need to convey an infectious commitment to cultivating and unleashing the potential of low-income talent.  Success will require the development of a growing partnership including leaders in California's corporate, political, public school and higher education communities.  Entrepreneurial instincts, political savvy and management skills will enable the Director to pilot the program in the Central Valley, which will be the subject of an Irvine-funded independent evaluation, and to lay the groundwork for California-wide spread of the model in 2004.  Because California will serve as the test site for school-wide evaluation of the College Summit model, the Director will represent the program in national venues as well.

      College Summit California's Year 2002 objectives include serving 200 low-income, rising seniors from the Central Valley, and training 40 of their teachers and counselors, in 5 College Summit workshops.  With significant technical assistance from College Summit National, the California office will locally coordinate the work of 5 partner colleges, 3-5 high schools, and several foundation and corporate partners.  During the second year of implementation, the Director will facilitate an independent evaluation of college-going in the participating schools, and will initiate the spread of the model to other California communities.

      The California Director will hire a full-time assistant, and will report directly to the Executive Director of College Summit National.
