      About BUILD
      BUILD is a social venture founded in East Palo Alto in 1999 and
      currently serving youth on the Peninsula and in Oakland, California.
      BUILD's mission is to provide real-world entrepreneurial experience
      that empowers youth from under-resourced communities to excel in
      education, lead in their communities, and succeed professionally.
      By encouraging students to develop their own small businesses, BUILD
      extends traditional entrepreneurial education far beyond the
      classroom and provides students with real-world business
      experiences.

      Position Description and Definition of Success
      The Oakland Incubator Manager will be a critical player at BUILD,
      responsible for the academic and business success of all students in
      the Oakland Youth Business Incubator (10th-11th graders). There will
      be approximately 25 sophomores and 10 juniors in the Oakland Youth
      Business Incubator to oversee and manage. The Incubator Manager
      will be based out of the downtown Oakland BUILD office, but will
      travel to community centers in the afternoons and evenings to
      oversee the Incubator program. The community centers are between 10
      and 20 minutes away from the Oakland office and are only accessible
      by car. This position provides a unique opportunity to directly
      impact the success of a young, rapidly growing nonprofit that has
      received national recognition.

      Criteria for Success for the Incubator Manager:
      • 85% student retention
      • 90% business incubator mentor retention
      • Student business teams participate in two venture capital
      meetings and two formal selling events
      • Number of students who show academic improvement over the
      course of the year
      • Number of students who are UC and CSU eligible as rising
      seniors

      Position Responsibilities:
      The primary responsibility of the Incubator Manager is to ensure
      that ~35 students achieve academic success and are on track to
      graduate from high school and be CSU/UC eligible. In addition, the
      Program Manager will ensure that students have a positive, rewarding
      experience while participating in BUILD.

      Academics
      • Provide Academic Advising - Regularly monitor, document, and
      assess student progress (grades) through transcript review, weekly
      progress reports (if necessary) and ongoing communication with high
      school teachers and counselors. Meet bi-weekly with students to
      create and discuss individual plan for academic success, paying
      special attention to course placement (for CSU/UC eligibility) and
      advising students when to add/drop classes. Meet with parents when
      students are academically at risk.
      • Recruit, Train and Manage Academic Mentors - Develop
      partnerships with local colleges and universities in order to
      recruit undergraduates to tutor Incubator students. Develop and
      implement mentor training.
      • Enforce All Academic Policies/Rewards - Each quarter,
      determine which students will be put on academic probation and if
      dismissal is necessary.
      • Manage SAT Preparation Program- Manage the SAT preparation
      process for juniors (maximum 10 students) - includes arranging a
      course schedule through The Princeton Review, managing the teacher
      relationship, selecting students for the course, and monitoring
      student progress.
      • Plan College Trips – Plan and coordinate all logistics for
      two college trips – (i.e. Southern California, East Coast, local).
      Determine appropriate schools, determine process for student
      selection, and coordinate all logistics, including tours at the
      school, transportation, lodging, food, and parent approval.
      • Manage Summer Program Placement – Help students find
      rewarding summer academic enrichment programs and/or summer
      internships. Help students create professional resumes and
      portfolios.

      Business
      • Help Students Prepare To Enter the Youth Business Incubator –
      Manage planning and implementation of BUILD's summer business boot-
      camp for students entering the youth business incubator.
      • Manage the Youth Business Incubator - Create a fun and
      competitive environment for students and their mentors during
      evening mentor sessions. Mentor sessions will happen two to three
      evenings each week from 5:30-7:00pm.
      • Coach Youth Business Teams - Work with each youth business
      to set goals, create milestones and outline tasks for the school
      year. Manage bookkeeping/accounting for each youth business.
      Organize and run a minimum of two BUILD sales events for all
      incubator teams.
      • Manage Mentors and Venture Capital Advisors – Train, oversee
      and maintain relationships with all incubator volunteers (mentors
      and VC Advisors). Support volunteers in helping to keep students
      goal-oriented and motivated.

      Qualifications:
      • Excellent Ability to Build Relationships With Students –
      Candidates must be able to quickly develop a rapport with students
      and also be comfortable enforcing academic policies
      • Excellent Academic Advising Skills – Candidates should have
      experience with academic advising at either the high school or
      college level. Familiarity with the California State University and
      UC System is a plus
      • Excellent Business Management Skills – Candidates should
      have some entrepreneurship and/or small business development
      experience, including the development and management of business
      processes and systems
      • Excellent Project Management skills – Candidates must be
      detail-oriented, extremely organized and able to prioritize and
      manage multiple projects at once
      • Excellent Communication Skills – Candidates must be able to
      communicate with multiple audiences, including students, parents,
      corporate partners, volunteers and high school personnel.
      • High Energy, Creative and Flexible – Candidates should be
      creative in their approach to building relationships with local
      advisors, business partners, etc and be willing to handle new and
      evolving roles as directed by organization growth
      • Minimum of 1 year experience working with youth (experience
      with under-resourced youth preferred)
