provide exceptional learning experiences and inspire lifelong
environmental and community stewardship. We offer programs for
schools as well as community programs for adults, children and
families; volunteer opportunities; a host of speaker's series and
other community events open to the public.
About the Director of Development position:
Overview: The Director of Development oversees all aspects of donor
relations, fundraising and special events. The Development Director
works with the development staff to update and implement the
departmental plan which includes: the annual fund, the completion of
endowment campaign, major gifts development, planned giving and
special events focused on raising funds and community awareness of
IslandWood. The Development Director must work collaboratively with
the organization's Leadership Team (including the Executive
Director, Finance Director, Marketing Director, and Education
Reports to: Executive Director
Supervises: The Development Team (Grants Coordinator, Foundation
Relations, Database Manager, Development Associate Special Events
Coordinator and Annual Fund Coordinator).
Annually, create a development plan setting forth the operational
work plan, goals and timelines for the development department.
Implement an annual fund plan that includes appropriate donor
categories and donor recognition.
Develop an ongoing cultivation, solicitation and recognition
program to retain and recruit new annual fund supporters.
Create and implement annual fund strategies that increase
individual and family support.
Corporate and Foundation Relations
Work with development staff to strengthen existing relations with
corporate and private foundations.
Work with staff to identify prospective corporate and foundation
support, and oversee proposals and follow up reports.
Work closely with the Chairperson, Executive Director, Board
Development Committee members and staff to develop and execute major
gift solicitation strategies.
Identify appropriate donor prospects, research appropriate fit,
cultivate relationships and prepare proposals.
Develop planned giving materials that invite donors to make
planned gifts towards endowment and other special projects and
Promote planned giving through newsletters and donor updates to
existing donors and community supporters, and through a new
IslandWood "Make a Gift" brochure.
Work with the Special Events Coordinator to plan appropriate
events that create financial support for IslandWood and also
increase the visibility of IslandWood in the Puget Sound
Develop positive working relationships with IslandWood staff to
plan events well in advance minimizing disturbances for events on
Gift Processing and Database Management
Understand and supervise all aspects of Blackbaud's Raiser's Edge
gift processing software.
Oversee the system to assure that all donor information is entered
and tracked appropriately.
Update each contact with acknowledgement letters and notes
Provide monthly gift reports to the Director Team and Development
Serve as a member of IslandWood senior management team and strive
to educate other Directors about the Development Team's efforts to
support the needs of the organization.
As a senior manager, play an active role in building a healthy and
positive work environment for the organization.
Manage day-to-day activities of the development staff. Provide
annual staff evaluations and provide ongoing guidance.
Board Development Committee
Assist Board members in their efforts towards all the above goals.
Work with the Development Committee chairperson to structure
Support the Board Development Committee by attending meetings and
providing staff to support them with donor cultivation and special
BA/BS degree or equivalent combination of education and work
Minimum of five years of successful non-profit professional
development experience in a leadership role with demonstrated
success in planned and endowment giving, annual fund
development, grant writing, individual giving and special events.
Strong PC skills with proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook and
database management programs (Raiser's Edge preferred).
Demonstrated ability to develop and address strategic priorities.
Proven ability to mentor and provide leadership, create and manage
meaningful donor projects related to IslandWood's mission; work
within tight timelines and limited budget; communicate with passion
and relevancy to a diverse constituency; thrive in a competitive
marketplace; contribute to a collaborative and team oriented
