      Leading a team of writers, editors and data analysts, the managing
      editor will develop content on GreatSchools.net that helps parents
      choose schools, guide their children's education and improve school
      in their communities. Working with product managers, engineers and
      others, the managing editor is responsible for providing
      GreatSchools.net customers with information and a user-experience
      that meets and exceeds their expectations.

      The successful candidate will possess strong editorial and
      management skills, as well as an understanding of parents and K-12
      education. He or she will be knowledgeable about key education
      issues such as standards and assessments, teacher quality, parent
      involvement, funding and educational leadership. This position will
      be a combination of approximately 60% hands-on work and 40%
      management.

      Primary responsibilities will include:
      - Working with product managers and others to develop new
      interactive features that help parents identify and evaluate schools
      that may be a good fit for their children
      - Developing a new email newsletter called Parent Advisor that
      provides parents with grade-level specific advice about how to
      support and advocate for their children's education
      - Developing an editorial calendar: planning articles and editorial
      features to meet the school choice and other K-12 related
      information needs of our parent-users
      - Working with marketing and product managers to expand our program
      to collect parent ratings and reviews of schools nationally
      - Working with product managers and others to improve our
      subscription product to provide more value to parents who are
      choosing schools for their children
      - Hiring and managing in-house editors and writers to produce high-
      quality Web site content and email newsletters
      - Hiring and managing freelance writers to produce high-quality Web
      site content and email newsletters
      - Working with business development to plan, negotiate and execute
      content licensing deals that bring high-quality content to the Web
      site and email newsletters
      - Editing articles and editorial features produced by in-house and
      freelance writers
      - Working with the president to determine editorial strategy and the
      position of GreatSchools on particular education issues
      - Developing the editorial talents of editorial staff and guiding
      their efforts to learn more about education issues

      Job Requirements:

      The ideal candidate will have 5+ years of writing and editing
      experience, along with extensive knowledge about K-12 education
      issues. He or she will have one or more of the following: 1)
      experience as a K-12 education professional; 2) experience as a
      journalist working on education issues; or 3) experience as a highly
      involved parent leader in local schools. The individual should have
      proven leadership skills in a fast-paced, demanding environment.

      Work experience, skills and attributes must include:

      - At least five years of editorial experience in a print or online
      environment
      - Impeccable writing and editing skills: demonstrated ability to
      write for a broad audience, including synthesizing complex issues so
      that non-experts can understand them
      - Editorial planning: experience discerning customer needs and
      guiding editorial development for a consumer-oriented media
      organization
      - Editorial management: experience recruiting and managing in-house
      and freelance editors and writers
      - Understanding of the issues faced by parents, including the
      challenges for parents as they choose schools, guide their
      children's education and solve school-related problems
      - Understanding of K-12 education issues. The ideal candidate knows
      the difference between norm-referenced and criterion referenced
      tests as well as the difference between the education models
      espoused by KIPP and the Coalition of Essential Schools
      - A passion for education debates that affect parents. The ideal
      candidate is widely informed about topics like No Child Left Behind,
      standardized testing, education funding and the challenges of
      recruiting and retaining high quality teachers because these are
      naturally fascinating issues
      - A familiarity with and interest in education data and its value to
      parents for choosing, evaluating and improving schools . A high
      level of enthusiasm for the mission: providing parents with the
      information they need to choose, support and improve schools
      - Demonstrated ability to excel as a team player; experience in
      a "matrix environment," where responsibility for success is shared
      among many people with different levels of responsibility in the
      organization

      Big pluses include:

      - Editorial experience in an online environment; knowledge of the
      online environment and how it differs from print media
      - Content licensing: experience negotiating and implementing content
      licensing agreements with partners

      Salary DOE. This is a full-time (40 hours per week), regular
