Job Title: Data Management Associate
Reports to: Director, Data Strategy
Status: Regular, full-time
Location: San Francisco, CA
We are currently seeking a highly analytical, detail-oriented Data Management Associate to join our growing team. The team writes code daily and we are looking for someone who is excited to use their programming knowledge to write scripts that handle large data sets and kick-start their career in data management. This entry-level position requires collaboration with many cross-functional units (engineering, product management, business development, marketing, and field staff) within a mission-driven organization focused on the role of parents in PreK-12 education.
This position reports to the Director of Data Strategy within the Business Insights team.
Establish and maintain contacts with data providers and acquire data files in multiple formats
Use scripting languages to clean and load data for display on the website and create ad-hoc reports
Design, implement, and execute reusable data cleansing, standardization, and transformation tools to transform data into standard formats
Document in detail the content and structure of data files
Write explanations for data points that are easily understandable to our parent audience
Conduct thorough QA on the display of data and explanations
Identify process improvement opportunities and work with engineers to implement tool enhancements that support increased automation of data loading tools
Correspond with users and support customer communication around data-related issues
Develop and maintain rigorous data quality control standards
Required Experience & Skills:
Bachelor's degree; Math/Statistics, Computer Science, or Data Sciences preferred
Knowledge of programming languages, such as Perl, Ruby, or others
Strong proficiency with Excel, including formulas, filtering and data formatting
Strong verbal and written communication skills with an orientation towards customer service
Ability to manage multiple projects, work within tight deadlines, and prioritize work as necessary
Mastery of Internet navigation and research
Strong interest in the education data space
Extremely detail-oriented and organized
Relentless pursuer of data quality and propensity for establishing processes and creating efficiencies
Self-starter; ability to work independently and as a strong contributor to team projects
Positive work ethic and sense of humor
A passion for the GreatSchools mission, to help parents get a great education for their kids
Familiarity with MySQL, Access or other databases
Experience working with K-12 education data
Experience working for an Internet company
