Job Opening: Vice President of Development for College Track
Since 1997, College Track has been empowering students to be the first in their family to achieve their dream of a college degree. College Track aims to increase high school graduation, enrollment, and college graduation rates among students from low-income communities. College Track is not only changing the lives of their students, they are also touching families and transforming communities. College Track creates a culture where college is no longer an exception, but the expectation. They work intensively with students for 8-10 years, from the summer before 9th grade through college graduation. College Track is currently in six cities across the country; in the next five years, they will double the number of students served and triple the number of college graduates, maximizing their impact as the premier college completion program in the nation.
College Track's results include:
100% of their seniors graduate from high school.
90% of their students are accepted to 4-year colleges.
54% of their students graduate from college - which is five times the national average for low-
income, first generation high school graduates.
85% of their students will be the first in their family to earn a college degree.
College Track has ambitious goals for continued and increased success, and they are currently seeking a Vice President of Development who will work with a dynamic CEO and a prominent and committed Board of Directors to shape the strategic direction of the organization. This person will lead College Track's fundraising efforts including individual donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, institutional grant seeking, event management, and donor communications. As the organization grows, the VP of Development will expand and deepen government, institutional, corporate, and individual donor connections, enabling College Track to achieve its aggressive development target.
The organization has been successful to date in garnering supporters including JPMorgan Chase, Wasserman Foundation, The California Endowment, Tipping Point Community, and the i.am.angel Foundation. Their budget has almost tripled in the last three years to $11M+ and includes a diversified portfolio of foundations, corporations, individuals, large events and government contracts. The ideal candidate will be an entrepreneurial professional with a strong track record of fundraising success, organizational leadership experience, a passion for the mission, and the ability to communicate College Track's vision and impact to a diverse group of constituents.
This position is located in Oakland, CA and will report directly to the CEO.
The Vice President of Development's responsibilities include:
Strategy Development and Project Management:
Create, implement and manage an effective fundraising platform that supports significant growth and long-term sustainability
Oversee the implementation of a multi-year, national communications strategy and the creation of all related marketing materials, thereby ensuring that College Track's identity is consistent
Support the CEO and Board of Directors in closing the gap for Capital projects
Partner with CEO to align development goals and vision with overall organizational strategic plan and long-term goals
Partner with the CEO, Board and Senior Leadership Team to impact the strategic growth and sustainability of the organization as we scale
Fundraising, Marketing and Event Management:
Manage key fundraising deliverables and performance measures -- monitor results and provide the CEO and Board members with regular updates
Initiate, cultivate, manage, and steward relationships with individual, foundation and corporate supporters
Expand an existing portfolio of major gift donors in order to significantly increase revenue from individuals
Partner with and guide the CEO to manage and optimize his involvement in cultivating, soliciting and stewarding donors
Lead the preparation and capture of high-quality grants (local and national) and oversee a grants calendar consisting of more than 100 annual submissions and reports
Oversee the details of annual fundraising events, including local receptions, graduations and the annual Pixar gala and auction
Team Management and Organizational Leadership:
Manage a team comprised of Regional Development Officers, a Director of Marketing and Communications, a Senior Grants Manager and a Development/Communications Associate
Work in concert with the CEO, Board of Directors, and its Development Committee to deepen the Board's fundraising and evangelical role
Oversee all department activities related to ongoing day-to-day fundraising efforts including implementation of a donor relations and stewardship program; oversee gift processing, record keeping, and reporting
Be an active participant and contributor on College Track's leadership and strategy team
First and foremost, the VP of Development must embrace the College Track vision of transforming low-income communities into places where college readiness and college graduation are norms.
Additionally, candidates must posses the following qualifications:
Minimum of 3-5 years of experience (strong preference for 7+ years of experience in an educational nonprofit, school, or other entrepreneurial, high-performing organization)
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
Proven record of successful management of a portfolio of major donors, foundation and corporate partners or equivalent experience of stakeholder cultivation and management outside of fundraising
Substantial experience designing and implementing comprehensive fundraising plans for all funding streams including major gifts, corporate, and foundation giving
Superior relationship-building and interpersonal skills which enable rapport-building with internal and external stakeholders
Agility and the capability to think strategically while executing tactically within in a lean and resource-constrained environment
Exceptional communication skills with demonstrable ability to write effectively, speak persuasively, and listen attentively
Superior organizational and project management skills with strong attention to detail
A history of achieving results and willingness to do "whatever it takes" to reach goals
A constant learner who is interested in being a proactive, positive member of the team
High level of self-awareness, humility, and emotional intelligence
