Subject: Support teachers the right way next Thursday
In the coming few months, OUSD may be expanding a teacher evaluation system that was successfully piloted last year. The system provides meaningful and actionable feedback to teachers to support their growth. This is in line with the school board's recently adopted goal of piloting a new professional growth and evaluation system to better support teachers by 2013-14 (Balanced Scorecard, December 2012). Around the country, educators and policymakers are recognizing important, universal aspects that make up effective teaching, and recognizing that experience and support matters.
We believe that supporting teachers should be one of our highest priorities.
On March 7, the Oakland education community will be gathering to “learn, think and lead” about the future of education in Oakland. We’ll be gathering to learn about effective teaching supports from experts in the field, and then share our own experiences within the district. Then we can use our experience and expertise to lead the district to better support teachers.
We are proud to co-host "Teaching Matters" with Oakland Community Organizations (OCO), SEIU Local 1021, Youth Together, Youth Uprising, The Education Trust-West, and the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights. We’ll be gathering at 6 p.m. on March 7 in the Edna Brewer Middle School Gym (3748 13th Avenue).
By June 30, we’re going to have a pilot of a new teacher evaluation and support system in OUSD. Make sure your voice helps shape it by joining us on March 7. The district is doing some important work, and we think you should be a part of the discussion.

P.S. Next month we have a team for the Oakland Running Festival, and we need 27 more volunteers to support the team. Can you help by joining us for a shift on March 23rd or 24th?
