At Rocketship Education, our mission is to eliminate the achievement gap within our lifetimes. The principal is responsible for driving this mission at the school level. (S)he is responsible for creating and maintaining an outstanding school culture for children and adults, leading the instructional vision for the school, delivering academic achievement results, building and developing leadership in staff members, and empowering parents and families.
The principal is the instructional, cultural, managerial, and community leader of the school. The principal sets the vision for the school and ensures that the school is a high-achieving college preparatory environment where all students finish the fifth grade at or above grade level. Additionally, the principal directly manages, supports, and develops the Assistant Principals, Operations staff and full Integrated Service Delivery (Special Education)Team. The Principal may directly manage and coach all educators in 1-2 grade levels., which includes conducting observation cycles, modeling lessons, and providing support and resources aimed at increasing teacher effectiveness and leadership. The principal is also responsible for engaging and empowering parents to become lifelong advocates for their children's education through monthly community meetings, partnering with the Regional Manager of Parent Leadership and keeping Rocketship families engaged and informed about opportunities to advocate for children in the broader community. Finally, the Principal is an organizational leader in driving innovation in our school model and building a strong and vibrant network regionally and nationally.
This position will be a school-based role in San Jose, CA and report to the Director of School. Each Rocketship school is supported by a Regional Support Office, which is a division of the National Team.
The position is for the 2013-2014 school year. Start date will be no later than July 1, 2013 with option to begin Spring 2013.
Foster a rigorous and college preparatory environment that ensures high levels of student achievement annually through the relentless use and assessment of data to drive and refine instruction
Manage, support, and develop Integrated Service Delivery (Special Education Team) and Enrichment Center Coordinator in addition to other members of the school leadership team including the Assistant Principals, and Operations Staff.
Manage self and others in a manner that creates a healthy, high-achieving environment where staff feel challenged, supported, and valued and there is open communication about professional growth and future career opportunities
Foster a school culture and environment of constant reflection and professional growth so that all staff continues to emerge as leaders within Rocketship and quickly assume leadership positions within the organization
Foster Rocketship school culture where students, educators, and members of the school community demonstrate Rocketship's beliefs, values, and behaviors
Create a school community that fully involves parents in student achievement through multiple outlets including home visits, regular community meetings, and parent/family meetings and also empowers them to become active advocates for their Rocketeer's education and achievement
Promote collaborative problem solving and open communication between teachers, Individual Learning Specialists (ILSes), students, and families
Develop classroom teacher practice and leadership through direct observation, coaching, and training (4+ teachers in 1-2 grade levels)
Work with the leadership team to design and lead staff meetings that build skill in the instructional staff
Oversee and/or contribute to the vision, design, and implementation of staff professional development and collaborative planning time
Lead the execution of community meetings and school wide events
Actively participate in the Principal cohort within their region
Lead and/or support other school site and network-wide initiatives as needed to foster strong school culture, academic excellence, and network growth
Provide leadership toward, creative and positive data driven behavioral innovations and instruction for high risk students, their teachers and their families
Support Operations Team and Support Staff on culture and discipline
Ultimate decision maker on all hiring and firing decisions in the school
BTSA coaching if necessary
Required Skills and Experience
2+ years of experience teaching in an urban city classroom and realizing significant gains
Strong leadership skills and personal drive
Relentless pursuit of high expectations
Demonstrated ability to prioritize and deliver up on multiple projects at once
Passion for urban children and their families
Ability to build partnerships with community organizations
Strategic planning experience
Ability to engage and empower parents and families
Strong communication skills
An entrepreneurial spirit and a proven track record
Experience in building and maintaining outstanding school culture

BA from accredited university
Valid Teaching Credential
Commensurate with experience
