Start-Up Charter School in Oakland Seeks Dedicated Teachers

OASIS, which plans to open in fall 2004 in downtown Oakland, will
provide a rigorous educational alternative to young people who have
dropped out of Oakland's traditional public high schools. OASIS
has received a $450,000 grant from the State to open its school, and
is now in the process of finalizing its Charter.

OASIS seeks credentialed teachers who are committed to improving
public education. Energy and enthusiasm are a must, as working with
traditionally underserved high school students will be both exciting
and challenging. Teachers who are comfortable in a start-up
environment are preferred. Believing that all students can achieve
      at high levels is essential.

Opening in fall 2004, OASIS will provide a rigorous education for
teens, 14-18 years of age, who have dropped out of Oakland's
traditional public schools. OASIS will enroll up to 400 young people
beginning with 60-80 students in 2004-05.

OASIS seeks full- and part-time teachers in the subject areas of
English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Visual or Performing Arts and
Physical Fitness and Health. Ideal candidates will have:
        • a single-subject teaching credential (or multiple single-
        subject credentials)
        • at least 3 years of teaching experience in an urban high
        school
        • a proven track record of improving student outcomes
        • experience using multiple instructional approaches such as
group facilitation, project-based learning, independent study,
        service-learning, and computer-based learning
        • the ability to lead and to work collaboratively with others
        • energy and enthusiasm for working with traditionally
        underserved high school students
        • dedication, patience and flexibility necessary to launch a
        successful charter school
        • a desire for professional development using inquiry and
        critical reflection

Teachers will have significant responsibility and decision-making
authority over curriculum and instruction. Teachers will work
collaboratively with the school director on curriculum planning,
scheduling, student assessment and professional development.
Teaching methods will be flexible and build upon the strengths and
interests of teachers as well as students. Founding teachers will
have input on the hiring decisions of new teachers. In addition to
teaching classes, teachers will advise 10-15 students. Founding
teachers also will have a unique opportunity to help shape an
        exciting learning environment in Oakland.

We are strongly committed to hiring a diverse and multicultural
staff, and offer competitive salaries and benefits.

OASIS has received a $450,000 grant from the State to open its
school, and has just submitted its charter petition to the Oakland
        Unified School District.
