The Stanford Center for Opportunity Policy in Education (SCOPE) was formed in 2008 as part of the School of Education and an affiliate of the Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity. SCOPE's faculty directors are Professors Prudence L. Carter and Linda Darling-Hammond.
SCOPE's mission is to foster research, policy, and practice strategies that enable all students to have the opportunity for a high-quality education in the United States and internationally. Our approach is to foster and inform a shared agenda of research, policy analysis, educational practice, and dissemination of ideas to improve quality and equality of education from early childhood through college with particular attention to high school.
SCOPE's work includes: writing, editing, contributing to and producing publications on opportunity policy issues; providing policy analyses, consultation, advice and briefings, including at state and federal levels; conducting research and evaluation projects; and mobilizing knowledge, ideas and debate through a range of media and by coordinating networks including multi-disciplinary academic, policy and practice perspectives focused on evidence and values supporting equity and opportunity. SCOPE incorporates the School Redesign Network (SRN), formed in 2000, and the Leadership for Equity and Accountability in Districts and Schools (Leads), involving a range of research, professional development, and assistance to schools, districts and states across the United states focused on system transformation, school reform, professional capacity and student opportunity, equity and achievement.
The Center seeks a highly experienced, credible and capable education leader and manager who can work within and across the intersections of research, policy and practice to advance equity and opportunity in education to serve as its Executive Director. The Executive Director is responsible for:
15%: Developing SCOPE's strategic development, profile and range of research, policy, and practice-related projects and grants in collaboration with Faculty Directors and staff, including identifying and securing new potential projects, writing grants, and building effective relationships with faculty, stakeholders, partners and funders;
15%: Overseeing, developing, contributing to and providing strategic support for the delivery of SCOPE's knowledge mobilization, networks and communications activities, including publications, academic networks, seminars, conferences, events, website and other media;
15%: Designing, overseeing and conducting research and writing analyses to inform district, state and national policies and practices that focus on expanding educational opportunity, such as reforms of funding, curriculum, assessment, organizational design, and educator development;
15%: Overseeing, supporting and providing strategic advice on the design and delivery of a range of professional development activities involving district and school leaders, including liaison with educators and funders;
20%: Managing Center staff, including all aspects of human resource management such as recruitment, staff development and progression, performance appraisals, mentoring and supervision and team development;
20%: Managing the Center's operations and day-to-day work, including overseeing financial processes, budget management, supervising administrative processes, writing grants and securing funds, liaising with Stanford staff and faculty for Center processes and connections, and developing effective communications and networks with SCOPE partners and stakeholders.
Candidates are expected to have a strong existing track record of academic research and scholarly activity, including demonstrated capacity to design, conduct, analyze, report, complete and communicate large complex research and evaluation studies. Preference will be given to those candidates with expertise in issues of educational equity and policy and their links to social differences (especially as they pertain to race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status). Preference will also be given to candidates with the capacity to understand and use both qualitative and quantitative methods. Alongside academic capacity, the successful candidate is expected to understand the current priorities, contexts and work of education policy and practice affecting schools, districts, states and the federal government. Previous experience as an education leader working in a federal, state, district, school of other educational organizational context would be an asset. The eligible candidate is required to have extensive management experience to lead and oversee both the strategic development and operational activities of a Center. Experience in human resource management, budget and financial processes and organizational development are expected. Experience managing and developing a professional staff in order to support and mentor individual staff, develop the overall team and interpersonal skills and acuity to work constructively with staff, networks within and beyond Stanford, education partners, policy makers, funders and other stakeholders. Demonstrated experience writing grants and successfully generating funds is an asset. The successful candidate is required to have excellent communication skills for writing reports and products, public speaking and presentations to represent SCOPE, and for engaging credibly in meetings and interactions with the wide and diverse range of individuals and groups associated with SCOPE.
PhD or other terminal degree or equivalent education and experience required. Please have 7-10 years relevant experience.
