PREPARE TO LEAD
The Rising Fellows Program prepares selected leaders for the BES Fellowship and school founding in the future. Rising Fellows are placed on a 12-month leadership development track while working full time in a BES school in a customized role. Rising Fellows benefit from insights that can only be gained while working at a gap-closing charter school, developing no excuses leadership during 20 training days, and visiting excellent schools. The Rising Fellows Program is a pipeline to the BES Fellowship.
At the end of the year Rising Fellows apply to the BES Fellowship to design, found and lead a school and will be will be uniquely prepared to excel in the selection process.
The BES Fellowship prepares entrepreneurial leaders to design, found, and lead gap-closing urban charter schools. BES Fellows visit the highest performing charter schools across the country, design a school, write a charter application, complete a residency, build a board of directors and work through the charter authorization process during the BES Fellowship year. After the BES Fellowship year, alumni of the BES Fellowship work with charters in hand to open their schools as founding school leaders. With continued support from BES, leaders identify facilities, hire a powerful founding team, recruit families and students, build out curriculum and launch a school.
WHO WE ARE
Building Excellent Schools is a national organization with more than a decade of experience training leaders to found independently managed urban charter schools. BES Fellows have founded more than 40 schools across the country. Many schools founded by BES Fellows have received national recognition for outstanding student achievement.

Rising Fellows will take on full time roles including teacher, dean level positions, director of operations, director of development and business manager. BES Schools include:

DEVELOP NO EXCUSES LEADERSHIP
Rising Fellows will develop no excuses leadership during 20 training days led by BES staff and other national experts on teacher feedback and coaching, decision-making, difficult conversations, teacher and staff hiring, developing leader voice, planning and assessment, finance, operations, community and board building. They will apply the training in the day-to-day work of an operating charter school.
OUTSTANDING CANDIDATES FOR THE RISING FELLOWS PROGRAM
Outstanding candidates are driven to found a charter school; are entrepreneurial, high capacity, highly flexible and urgent; and demonstrate a commitment to urban education. Candidates who are a fit for the Rising Fellows Program will 1) benefit from an additional year of training and development around leadership in a no excuses charter school or 2) may have limited first-hand knowledge of strong charter schools.

The 2011 Fellowship Application is the same application for both the Rising Fellows Program and BES Fellowship. All applicants will be considered for both opportunities.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling and urgent basis until the February 20th Winter Deadline.
Rising Fellows will begin training and work at a BES school in summer 2011.
